Message from the Principal
Hello Gator Families-
The newsletter is full of information and some introductions into some of our related arts programs. Please take time to review and reach out with any questions!
Please remember our primary school fundraiser, the Gator Gallop is happening Friday, October 7. Packets were sent home last week and we hope you will register your child online. All students will get outside and run, skip, hop and jump their way through the Gator Gallop course! It is always a fun day!
Thank you for sharing your children with us and have a wonderful week.
-Christi Thomas
Calendar items:

September 30 - eLearning Day ( Students will NOT attend school; staff will be in training)
Me Museum
Second Grade Diamond Dazzlers kicked off the school year by inviting their families to the Me Museum.
5 Things About Me
Their presentations included introducing themselves and explaining about five important things in their lives.
Diamond Dazzlers need your help to make the world a better place.
Their service project will encourage every Gator to collect pop tabs for Riley Hospital. Students are busy collecting containers, counting pop tabs, decorating our Riley bus that was donated by Kroger, and deciding what prizes will be given out.
Art Room Information
My name is Erin Green and I am the art teacher at Geist Elementary. For those families that have kindergarteners or are new to GES, you will be receiving an email from Artsonia. This is our online art gallery. You can link to your child's account through this email. When a project is completed, a photo will be uploaded to the student's gallery. Most artwork stays at school until spring. This gives me the opportunity to select pieces for the district art show in March. All artwork is returned in May. If you would like a particular artwork sent home early, please send me an email.
This school year, I am able to provide paint smocks in the art room. You can also provide your own, but it is not required. I encourage wearing proper clothes to art--those you don't mind your child getting a bit messy in. (Even when it says "washable" that isn't always the case!)
Please reach out if you have any questions. My email is egreen@hse.k12.in.us

Literacy Night with Author Guest Terry Border - Sept. 21
Mark your calendar for Literacy Night 2022 on Sept. 21st from 5:30 to 7:30 PM. GES will be celebrating our readers and writers. Our special author guest, Terry Border, is the creator of bent object characters in his books Peanut Butter and Cupcake, Scaredy Snacks!, Milk Goes to School, and more. His title Snack Attack! won 2nd place in the 21-22 Young Hoosier Award competition. Join us for a fun-filled evening.
Spanish - Global Studies
My name is Stacey Zimmerman, and I am one of the Spanish teachers for the Global Studies Program in Hamilton Southeastern Schools. This is my 16th year of teaching and my 6th year in the district as a Spanish teacher. I am very excited to be back working with the staff and students at Geist Elementary!
During our time together, the students actively learn the Spanish language through whole group and small group games, art, songs, rhythm, literature, and movement. Material is taught through experiences that stimulate a high level of student involvement.
Kindergarten and first grade students have learned greetings and farewells such as “good morning,” “good afternoon,” “good night,” “hello” and “goodbye.” They are currently learning how to ask someone his or her name and how to respond to that question.
Second grade students have reviewed greetings and farewells in Spanish. They are currently working on identifying numbers to 20.
Third and fourth grade students have practiced numbers to 20 and responses to the question, “How are you?” They have learned or reviewed how to say that they are hungry, thirsty, hot, cold, and sleepy. Both grade levels are also working on numbers by tens to 100 as well as the numbers in between.
We are off to a fantastic start in Spanish! It is wonderful to see the students’ enthusiasm for learning another language!
