UTC Oxfordshire
Newsletter - 27th November 2020
Dear all
It has been another week to remember; Thanksgiving, Black Friday and ironically Buy Nothing Friday
Year 11 are excited to be back in the building and it's great to have that 'noise' around the corridor. We would like to extend a big thank you to all families of isolated students for supporting them with their online learning.
On Friday we joined a UTC Cyber event - thank you Chris for organising - more details of this next week but a great opportunity for UTCs to link up with each other and employers.
Black Friday or gifts for Christmas
I really liked this gift suggestion from a staff member and it made me think about not only the charities our staff donate to at Christmas but how we might give back as a school this year. We will have, from next week, a box in reception where you can donate to Sleigh2Give a local charity (details here), and our normal Christmas Jumper Day (proceeds go to Save the Children), but it would be nice if any of you run a local business selling Christmas Gifts and Crafts, please do let us know and we will share with staff and families.
The week ahead
Next week will see the return of Year 13, Year 10 and Year 11 engineering PPEs on Wednesday. Please remind students to bring their facemasks with them, and the importance of wearing them onsite outside of lessons. Please note that the majority of Year 10 will be able to return to site on the 3rd December - an email will come out on Monday to Y10 parents confirming the return date of their student.
Stay safe
With good wishes
Sam

Work Experience
The In2scienceUK Programme places students from a wide variety of interests and backgrounds across all STEM disciplines with leading universities and companies, and is free for students to take part in.
The programme works to support students in four distinct areas:
- Online research modules. Students take part in live university-standard lectures and research tasks led by top researchers from across the UK and will work on cutting edge research and innovation to make their UCAS applications really stand out.
- Online skills, employability and careers workshops. Students gain practical support directly from experts at UK universities, research centres, companies and healthcare organisations. We’ll bring students guidance on areas including: personal statement writing, university admissions, CV writing and interview tips, university finance, careers panels, and a day in the life of a student, to name just a few.
- In person work shadowing and online mentoring. Students will get the chance to meet and receive tailored advice from STEM mentors based on their own needs throughout the programme and visit their workplace to gain insight into what it is like to work in the sector. We specially match every student to a mentor whose work and career pathway will be of interest to them.
- The In2scienceUK Alumni Network. After the programme, students will be a part of our In2scienceUK Alumni Programme which will support their journey through university and beyond. The Alumni Programme gives students access to workshops, networking events, and career opportunities plus much more to help give them an inside track to the STEM career of their dreams.
The entire 3-week programme will run over the summer of 2021 between Year 12 and Year 13 starting on 2nd August and running through 27th August. The In2scienceUK Programme places students from a wide variety of interests and backgrounds across all STEM disciplines with leading universities and companies, and is free for students to take part in.

Year 10 and 12 SEN Information Evening
Thank you to those of you who came to the SEN information evening on Monday, we hope you found it useful. At the end of this newsletter you can find a copy of the strategies students can use to help deal with any learning barrier they may have.
We also have access to reader pens which can be purchased through the UTC if you think it would be of benefit to your student. There is a video link below explaining what the pen does and how it can help. We have 10 pens available for trial which can be borrowed from the IT office.
The UTC does get a discount on the price (£180) if we buy an order of ten or more pens. If you are interested in buying one of these then please let us know so we can place a bulk order. c pen exam reader - YouTube
