Glenealy School Newsletter
5th September 2019
Message from Chris
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
Another great week has passed, and although the weather has been more than a little damp, spirits in school have been very high. It has been fabulous to see the learning in action around the school and the children have begun to get into their Units Of Inquiry with great enthusiasm.
This week we welcomed the introduction of our new Class Parents, who are ready to organise socials, fundraisers and support with communication within each class. If they haven’t already contacted you they will be doing so in the very near future. Thank you to the parents who have volunteered for these roles and to the PTA for organising the introduction for the parents.
Football and netball activities started this week, it was great to see our coaches along with so many children participating in these after school clubs. Please can we remind parents and children that when the bell goes at 3:15 pm, it is time for children who are not waiting for after school activities to leave the school grounds. This helps the coaches and after school clubs to set up for the afternoon activities.
It was nice to greet parents in Year 3 for their Camp briefing - we know the children will have a fantastic experience while on camp later in the term. Briefings and details of other camps with be provided later in the year for Years 4, 5 and 6 and we look forward to some great experiences on all of these.
Thank you to all the parents who responded to our survey, which was sent digitally after the ‘Meet the Teacher’ evening, asking parents which workshops or parent information events they would like this year. We are just collating the responses and will publicise a programme for the year in next week’s Newsletter.
Finally. A quick reminder that this evening, for those who have tickets, we have the PTA Bingo - “Eyes down for a full house!” We look forward to seeing you all there!
Best Regards,
Chris

Shoes collection for Kenya
Hello, I’m Henry and I’m in 4M.
Over the summer holidays I went with my family to Kenya and while there we worked with the charity KipGiving. We visited some villages and gave kids second-hand shoes that people from HK donated. The kids were really happy and excited. Did you know that in Kenya if you don’t have shoes, you can’t attend school?
I am asking people to help by donating old shoes so we can help kids in Kenya go to school. Instead of throwing your shoes to the rubbish, I will collect them and we will send them to Kenya. If you don’t have old shoes to donate you can help out with the cost of postage by donating $10, or even more if you’d like.
On Friday 13th September, please bring in your old shoes (good quality that may no longer fit you), new socks or a $10 donation (to help with postage of the shoes to Kenya). I will set up a table in the playground next Friday morning before school starts.
Thanks,
Henry
Do you want to...
help kids in Kenya go to school?
prevent sending unwanted shoes to landfill?
give shoes to kids who have none?
Without shoes, kids in Kenya cannot go to school!
Please donate:
Footwear that doesn’t fit or that you don’t want anymore
New socks
$10 to go towards shipping the shoes to Kenya.
Bring to school on Friday 13th September 2019

Special Talk by Professor Yong Zhao - 7th September
Professor Yong Zhao:
" What Matters: Effects and Side Effects of Education ".
We are delighted to be in the position to offer to our ESF parents' community, Prof Yong Zhao's following Keynote: " What Matters: Effects and Side Effects of Education ".
In this presentation, Professor Yong Zhao brings extensive evidence to show that every child has both potential and need to become great. To help each and every child achieve their greatness, we need a different kind of education that focuses on enhancing the unique strengths and passion of each child. Education is to help each and every child discover and develop their strengths and passions with the goal to create value for others and the world. To do so, we need to make education personalizable by the child, instead of personalized for the child.
This presentation will take place on Saturday 7th September at Quarry Bay School, from 9.00 am to 10.30 am.
This is on a first-come, first-served basis - maximum 300 places

Important Reminder
Has your child's visa status changed?
As a reminder, all children attending an ESF school need the appropriate and valid visa status to do so. Please inform the school if your child's visa status changes. For more information, you may refer to the Immigration section on the ESF website.
