Hawk Squawk 5/12/22

Principal's Message

Dear Hallinan Families,

May not only brings flowers, but a new month and a new character trait: COOPERATION, working together and helping others. Last Friday, Mrs Lunde's 2nd Grade class had the opportunity to plant a beautiful garden with residents at Mary's Woods. As you can tell by these photos, a little bit of rain did not dampen any spirits. This fun collaboration may become an annual event and we look forward to additional cross-generational activities with Mary's Woods.

It looks like rain this weekend, but if you get the opportunity to plant something, inside or outside - encourage your children to participate. Watching a flower bloom, tasting fresh cut basil or smelling lavender will bring out the joy of gardening in just about anyone. Visit the Hallinan garden for inspiration!

Have a great day!

Melissa Griffiths

Big picture

State Assessment Score Reports

This summer, LOSD will deliver students’ state assessment results online through ParentVUE rather than mailing paper. This is in keeping with the district’s strategic goal of sustainability and mirrors how we deliver report cards. Your child’s assessment reports will appear on your ParentVUE Documents page in late July. As you review your student’s English Language Arts, math, and science scores, please keep in mind:
  • An achievement level of 3 or 4 is considered to be on track for the student’s grade level.
  • Scores on state assessments are only one measure of a student’s academic progress. We use these scores in conjunction with classroom work and other daily, weekly, monthly, and term assessments to understand your student’s strengths and areas for improvement.
If you have forgotten your ParentVUE password, go to the login page, click "I am a Parent," then click "Forgot Password." If you are unsure whether you have a ParentVUE account or need assistance, please contact your student’s school.

COVID-19 Reported Case Update

The LOSD COVID-19 Dashboard is up to date with the number of staff and students who have reported to LOSD testing positive for COVID-19, regardless of school exposure. At Hallinan, as of 12 pm on 5/12, we have 2 cases reported in the last week. With any potential exposure, people are advised to watch for illness symptoms and follow Oregon Health Authority COVID-19 exclusion procedures. Please contact District Nurses, Ann Nelson at nelsona@loswego.k12.or.us and Nikki Retzlaff at retzlafn@loswego.k12.or.us if your student has tested positive for COVID-19.

Stay Home When Ill & Test for COVID-19

If your student experiences any of the following symptoms, please have them stay home, and contact the office or our district nurses, Ann Nelson at nelsona@loswego.k12.or.us and Nikki Retzlaff at retzlafn@loswego.k12.or.us, about possible exclusion from school and COVID-19 testing:

Primary COVID-19 symptoms: • Cough • Temperature of 100.4 degrees F. or higher or chills • Shortness of breath or Difficulty breathing • New loss of taste or smell

Non-primary COVID-19 symptoms: • Fatigue • Muscle or body aches • Headache • Sore throat • Nasal congestion or runny nose • Nausea or vomiting • Diarrhea

  1. You may obtain free Covid-19 at-home test kits at Covidtests.gov.

  2. Vaccination remains the best protection against serious illness from COVID-19 and reduces spread of the disease. Find a vaccine appointment for ages 5 and older at Get Vaccinated Oregon.

  3. Please Keep Ill Students Out of School guide for communicable disease symptoms.

2022-23 Verification

LOSD needs parents/guardians of all students enrolled for the 2022-23 school year to log into ParentVUE and review/update your students' information through the Register/Verify tab. This benefits both families and schools by:

  • Ensuring that schools have accurate information to reach parents and other contacts in both emergency and non-emergency situations. Verification is important even if your address or contact information has not changed over the past year because the school may have incorrect information from a previous year.
  • Confirming parent email addresses for Google Classroom and other applications to participate in your student's learning.
  • Enabling distribution of key information in the district's K-12 Family Handbook.

If you have forgotten your ParentVUE password, go to the login page, click "I am a Parent," then click "Forgot Password." For assistance with the verification process, refer to the user guide on the LOSD website. If you are unsure whether you have a ParentVUE account, or need assistance, please contact the office staff (contact information at the bottom of the newsletter).

i-Ready Spring Assessment

Elementary students in Lake Oswego are completing two online i-Ready assessments in class. One is for math and the other is for reading. As you know, i-Ready is a program that helps us determine your child’s strengths and areas for future growth. This is the third of three i-Ready diagnostic assessments we give each year, and the results will be shared with parents via ParentVUE before summer break. For kindergartners, this will be their second i-Ready assessment.

Volunteer Requirements

We're so excited to have volunteers back in the building! Please verify that you have completed the following requirements before volunteering in schools:

  • Complete Background Check through school Raptor system - if you have not already completed this, bring your driver's license or passport with you on your first day volunteering and we'll get you registered in the office.

  • Fill out this form: Sign Statement of Knowledge and Understanding of LOSD Policies - we are happy to provide additional information if you would like it.

  • Show/Send Proof of Vaccination to Lee Gates (gatesl@loswego.k12.or.us). LOSD will not be granting exemptions for volunteers.
