Healthy Snacks at School
While we encourage you to send healthy snacks to school; we ask that you do not send any eggs or nuts to be eaten in the classroom with your child. We have a number of students with signifigant allergies, and therefore ask for your cooperation. You may still send your child with a peanut butter sandwich for their lunch, as we do have a special area for our allergy students to sit to eliminate the chance of accidental exposure. If you have any questions, please feel free to speak with your child's teacher, or you are welcome to call the office at 920-662-5000. We appreciate your help!
Reading Olympics starts on October 4th
The list of books that you will need to read is included on the Meadowbrook Library webpage. You need to read all eight of the books to qualify for a team. Upon completing each book, you will also need to complete a page in your Reading Olympics Journal. Please print a journal page for each book. The journal will help you log your reading and assist you in recalling the details of all the books that you read when it comes time for our discussions. This will be a good study guide to assist you in preparing for the book challenges we will have in December and January.
We will officially begin our Reading Olympics book discussions on October 4th. If you would like to participate, please complete the participation agreement form found here. All students who participate in this event by reading the books, completing the journal, attending the morning discussions, and competing in the challenges will receive a reading award and be entitled to attend the reading celebration at the end of the program.
We are very excited about this program and hope you consider participating. The books are available in print, eBook and/or audio format in our school library, as well as, Brown County Library. Books in the school library are on a first come, first serve basis. Because of this, we encourage you to begin reading the books as soon as possible, rather than waiting to read them the week before the scheduled discussion.
Please contact Mrs. Wick at 920.662.5091 or michwick@hssdschools.org if you have any questions about Reading Olympics.
Looking forward to reading and enjoying books together,

Let’s Talk! with Mrs. VanAsten and Mrs. Heim, Speech-Language Pathologists
Hello, and welcome to another wonderful school year at Meadowbrook Elementary! We are Katie VanAsten and Julie Heim and we are the Speech-Language Pathologists (SLP) for students at Meadowbrook Elementary school this year. As SLPs, we work with students who have diagnosed speech and language delays. These delays include articulation (speech sounds), grammar, expressive and receptive language, voice, or fluency (stuttering). While we get the privilege of working with many of the students that come to our school, we know there are more still that we do not get to meet. Language is such a large part of our lives, and we would like to take an opportunity each month to share what we hope will be some useful, easy tips for enhancing the speech and language skills of ALL students.
Mrs. VanAsten will be working with students in grade Kindergarten and 4th, while Mrs. Heim will be working with students in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade. If you ever have questions about your child’s speech and language development, please don’t hesitate to give us a shout! We are happy to be a resource for all.
Communication is empowering - and we want every child to feel empowered. Thank you for your support, and we wish all the best to each student and family at Meadowbrook Elementary School! Let’s make it a great year!
Mrs. Katie VanAsten

MAP testing is next week for 2nd & 3rd Graders!
As the school year is officially underway; our first round of state testing is coming up for our 2nd-4th graders. The dates and subjects covered are listed above. MAP stands for Meadures of Academic Progress. MAP is an online assessment that is aligned to the Common Core Standards that our school district uses to assess student growth.
To help your child prepare, it is important that your child get a good night's rest prior to their assigned testing dates and fuel up their brains with a good breakfast. Our staff will assure them that this is only one test - and does not determine how smart they are. Please reach out to our guidance counselor, Mrs. Laughrin if your child is exhibiting anxiety as their testing dates approach. Her email is saralaug@hssdschools.org

A note from your School Board Representative
Budget Hearing and Annual Meeting
This year the Howard-Suamico Board of Education will hold its public Budget Hearing and Annual Meeting on September 30, 6:00 p.m. in the District Office Community Training Center, 2706 Lineville Road, Suamico. In addition, the Superintendent will present a State of the District address.
We have been asked on occasion about the purpose of these meetings which are also referred to as Meetings of the Electors. State Law requires school districts across Wisconsin to hold a Budget Hearing and Annual Meeting each year. There are legal requirements surrounding these events, but school officials have long recognized this event as an opportunity for the community and the school district to connect, to communicate, and to reach greater understanding. School administrators and board members provide focus on achievements, needs and the future of the district. Community members are presented with information about the operations of the school district, are able to ask questions, and will then vote on various motions.
On behalf of the Howard-Suamico School District, the Board of Education invites attendance and participation from district residents. Please consider joining us on Monday, September 30. Copies of the budget book will be available in the School District Office, 2706 Lineville Road, Green Bay, beginning September 20, 2019, and will be available at the meeting on September 30.
