MINDFUL DROP-OFFS AND PICK UP OF STUDENTS
When dropping off your child, or picking them up, please avoid stopping on double yellow lines, as this obstructs traffic and poses a risk to pedestrians. Please also refrain from parking on double yellow lines or blocking driveways. These measures ensure that our neighbors can move freely and safely within their community. By following these guidelines, you contribute to the overall safety and efficiency of our drop-off system.
Let's work together to maintain positive relationships with those around us.

SPOTSWOOD COLLEGE CONNECTING GLOBALLY
We are delighted to extend a warm welcome to our new international students who have joined us from Europe and our sister school in Japan, Hatsukaichi Senior High School! As we embrace diversity and foster a global perspective, we are thrilled to have these bright minds become a part of our vibrant school community.
We also want to take a moment to celebrate the incredible spirit of our students currently traveling around Spain. Their initiative, which raised over $21,000, showcases the compassion and generosity within our school community. We are thrilled to hear that they are having a wonderful time exploring the beauty of Spain while representing Spotswood College.
As a school community, we are committed to providing a supportive and inclusive environment that encourages curiosity, understanding, and friendship. We encourage all our students to reach out, make new friends, and embark on this exciting journey of exploration and discovery together.
Throughout the year, we will be organizing various events, activities, and cultural exchanges to celebrate our diverse backgrounds and foster a sense of unity. We invite everyone to actively participate and embrace the opportunity to learn about the world through the eyes of our international students.
Once again, a warm welcome to our new students! We are confident that your time at Spotswood College will be filled with growth, learning, and unforgettable experiences.
WITT TE PUKENGA SECONDARY TERTIARY STUDY IN 2024
Spotswood College will again have a number of senior students attend WITT Te Pūkenga to be part of various Trades Academy courses in 2024.
These students attend WITT Te Pūkenga at least one day a week over several terms and gain NCEA credits. The learning takes place in a practical and hands-on environment using industry-standard equipment and technology relevant to their chosen career path. Students develop the foundation skills needed to progress to further study opportunities or move directly into employment.
We congratulate all students who have been accepted on to their courses and remind them that they have important paperwork to collect from the Vocational Pathways office at school.

CELL PHONE BAN
As we embark on the new academic year, we want to bring your attention to an important update regarding the use of cell phones on school premises.
The government has banned the use of cellphones in schools, allowing them only for students with verified medical conditions. In alignment with this directive, we kindly request that all students keep their cell phones at home or turned off and securely stowed in their bags until the end of the school day.
Effective communication is vital for a successful learning environment, and we assure you that messages to students can be relayed promptly through our school office. Our dedicated staff are here to assist in ensuring any necessary information reaches your child promptly.
It's essential to note that any cell phones brought to school will be the sole responsibility of the student. We encourage parents and caregivers to discuss the importance of adhering to this expectation with their children, emphasising the school's commitment to creating a focused and distraction-free learning environment.
Your support in reinforcing this matter at home is invaluable. Together, we can foster an environment that promotes engagement, attentiveness, and positive social interactions among our students.
If you have any questions or concerns regarding this, please feel free to contact our school office. We appreciate your cooperation and commitment to maintaining a conducive learning atmosphere for all students.
Thank you for your understanding and support.
Warm regards,
Nicola Ngarewa

In the past, we have been able to provide loaner Chromebooks and other appropriate devices to students who needed them for remote learning or classroom use. However, as we move forward into the new school year, we want to make you aware of a crucial change. Due to various factors, including increased demand and resource constraints, we will have limited devices available for loan during the upcoming year.
We understand that not all families may have access to the necessary technology, and we want to ensure that every student has the tools they need to succeed in their education. Therefore, we strongly encourage families to make provisions now to ensure that their child has a Chromebook or another appropriate device available for the upcoming school year.
Here are a few steps you can take to prepare:
Check Your Current Device: Please assess whether your child's existing device is in good working condition and suitable for their educational needs. Ensure it is up-to-date and ready for school-related tasks.
Explore Affordable Options: If your family does not already have a suitable device, consider exploring cost-effective options for purchasing or acquiring one. Many retailers offer budget-friendly Chromebooks that are well-suited for students.
Utilise Community Resources: Investigate local community programs or organisations that may provide assistance or loaner devices for students in need. These resources can be invaluable in ensuring access to technology for your child's education.
Reach Out to Us: If your family is facing exceptional circumstances and is unable to secure a device, please reach out to us for support. We will do our best to assist and explore available solutions on a case-by-case basis.
Thank you for your attention to this matter, and we look forward to a successful school year ahead.
PARENT AND TEACHER EVENING
By now, our Learning Advisory teachers (LAs) should have reached out to introduce themselves to you and extend an invitation to our upcoming Parent Meet Teacher Picnic. We encourage you to join us for an evening of connection and entertainment. Feel free to pack a picnic, food trucks will be available to buy on-site. This is a fantastic opportunity to engage with your child's Learning Advisory teacher, foster meaningful connections, and enjoy an evening of shared experiences. We look forward to seeing you there!
2023 BUILD A HOUSE SUCCESS
BUILD A HOUSE PROJECT COMPLETE
Wednesday 24th Jan saw the 2023 Build A House project officially completed when the finished 2 bedroom house was moved off site by project partners Brittain's House Movers.
A special mihi to AGC and their passionate tutor Greg Southorn who ensured the project met its deadline and that all students completed their level 3 program of learning.
A huge congratulations to the team of year 12 and 13 students who all had input to the success of this inaugural year of the project.
We are excited about the 2024 version of the house build and again working to provide an engaging, real world and rewarding challenge to our akonga.
Special mention to James Mora who has picked up a highly sorted apprenticeship with Profound Group Builders on the back of connections made through the BAH course.
Also, year 13 Joe Cocker has landed employment with South Coast Construction that he is hoping leads to an apprenticeship after an initial trial period.
All students passed the course with a high number of level 3 credits, a vastly improved industry skill base, and also the development of many soft skills and desirable employment attributes and attitudes.
SCHOOL UNIFORM EXPECTATIONS
One of the key elements that contribute to the pride and identity of our school is the uniform, and we would like to take a moment to emphasise the importance of wearing it correctly.
The school uniform is more than just attire; it is a symbol of unity among our students. Adhering to the uniform guidelines not only fosters a sense of belonging but also sets a positive tone for the school community as a whole.
It is important to note that it is black comfortable shoes for the formal uniform and sneakers for the sports uniform.
We kindly request the support of parents and guardians in reinforcing the importance of correct uniform wear at home. Your partnership in this matter contributes significantly to the positive culture we strive to maintain at Spotswood College.

Keeping Yourself And Your Whanau Safe In Our Digital World: Bullying And Harassment
Digital platforms can be useful tools, but in this time and age, there is a significant risk that social media platforms can be used by students to bully each other or spread rumours about others. We are asking for the support of this community to come together in addressing this.
The Spotswood College’s Responsible Use of Technology Policy is below.
As part of the enrollment process, an agreement is signed by both the student and the caregiver regarding the appropriate use of the school's ICT systems. The school offers a monitored internet connection and a safe environment for the students.
Unfortunately, students’ personal cell phones are not covered by the protections that the system offers. These devices can easily be used to cause harm including the form of unconsented recording or photography.
To prevent this, it is important that as a community we understand the Harmful Digital Communication Act and the impact that this form of bullying and harassment can have on the victims. In this digital age rumours and jokes can have lingering consequences.
The Netsafe organization is the best place to get help either by starting a conversation with your child, seeking advice to help create a safer home internet connection or getting support if you are already suffering from online abuse.
ATTENDANCE
We have a school attendance target of above 90% for every student. To ensure that together we reach this, it is important that if you know your child is going to be absent from school, that you please contact the school by using one of the following options.
Option 1: Call 06 751 2416 and press (1) to report a student's absence. Record your child’s name, parents' name, contact details and reason for absence.
Option 2: Send a text to the Attendance Officer (Jenine) on 021 023 93060
Option 3: Send an email to absent@spotswoodcollege.school.nz
Option 4: Use the school app - SKOOL LOOP to submit an absence
Based on our attendance data system we will send an automated text to parents of any students that are absent, once in the morning and once in the afternoon.
If for any reason you are concerned about your child’s attendance, you can speak with the Attendance Officer (see contact details above) or she will pass you on to the DEAN or your child’s Learning Advisor.
Skool Loop
Spotswood College will be using Skool Loop to send out notices and information to our whānau. This is a free app available on Apple and Android devices. You can also access newsletters, contact the school about absences and find helpful links as well as quick access to Kamar.

Sick or injured at school
The sickbay is closed for any sick-related issues. If your child is sick, we will contact home and ask for them to be picked up immediately. Students should not arrange this themselves as we need to know where they are at all times.
The sick bay is open to help with injuries.
A public health nurse is available for you and your caregivers if you have any concerns. This could be a rash, not sleeping well, regular headaches, ongoing health issues etc.
Please ask to talk to her privately. Consultations are confidential, offering information and advice. Health resources are available, with a choice of providers for referrals to agencies.
If you would like to see the public health nurse, please ask staff at student reception.
