Flywheelers
Despite the threat of rain, we had a lot of fun at Flywheelers. We learned a lot about what life was like on the farm in Northern Michigan in the early 1900s. The kids enjoyed learning about a sawmill, shingle making, corn grinding, and domestic work of the time. Thanks so much to Mrs. Keller, Mrs. Liddy, and Mrs. Dickson for helping with our trip.
Language Arts
- Reading - This week we read a biography about Martin Luther King Jr. as a child. We focused on author's purpose and used examples from the text to explain why the author wrote the story.
- Writing - We worked on revising, editing and writing the final draft of our summer stories.
- Grammar - We learned about declarative, imperative, explanatory and interrogative sentences. We also learned about prefixes, il, im, in, and ir and how they change the meaning of words.
- Spelling - Our focus was on short e and long e words
Math
This week students learned how to rename numbers (12,000 = 120 hundreds = 1,200 tens). We also worked on adding numbers in the hundred thousand’s place, and we used rounding to estimate sums and check the reasonableness of our answers. Enclosed in your child’s Friday folder, you will find a letter about MobyMax, a web-based tool that we are using here at school. The letter contains all the information your child will need to access their account from home.
Science and Social Studies
Social Studies- We had a great discussion on Monday using the homework that most students brought in. There were some really interesting artifacts to share! The class had a great time trying to guess which artifacts belonged to which social scientist.
Science- We studied the different structures of plants that offer them protection from lack of water and animals that would like to eat them. The students partnered up to do an investigation of different plants and identify the structures that protected them, and what they protected them from.

Homework
Students have a homework log coming home today now that they have their iPads. We are encouraging them to practice grammar, math, spelling and reading on their iPad. Four nights a week we are asking the students to pick two activities and practice on either Spelling City, Moby Max (language or math), and Raz Kids. Students have taken a placement test on Moby Max for both language and math and the problems they are working on are at their level. The only one I haven't introduced yet is Raz-Kids. Please let me know if you have any questions.
