THE ROAD TAKEN

By Dinea Smith

May 2007

Two roads diverged 25 years ago,

And wishing I could travel both,

But being one nurse, long I stood,

Praying “which one” as long as I could.

He led me to School Nursing,

Perhaps the better choice,

More time with family and playing

And not working nights.

That early morning, equally placed,

My feet crept quietly on that road,

Oh, I wished I could wait just one more day,

Yet knowing that God leads the way.

Band Aids, blisters, inhalers and pills,

Bones, stinky feet, and chills.

I thought “What’s happening?”

How can this be? I can’t be everywhere?

With colleagues support,

And friendships made,

My shoulders loosened

As I felt their loves surround.

Somewhere, someone in years to come:

Two roads diverged 25 years ago, and I---

I took the one less chosen,

Now trodden with love,

The Children’s Road was the one!

School Nurses shape the future one healthy student at a time!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~My Priceless Frequent Flyers~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Adorable Smiles
Sleepy eyes and heads
Lovable complaints
Stomachaches, headaches, toothaches,
Hangnails, ant bites, splinters.
Injuries here & there
Endless complaints.
It better be good this time my dear
Stop look at me Nurse Blake
Assess me from within
Broken homes, mom critically ill,
Dad left home, court day, or just simply cry out for help.
Homeless, emotionally disturbed, poverty or can’t sleep.
Just needing a smile& a hug for today
Pay attention to me and listen to me.
Hold me when I’m afraid
Feed me when I’m hungry
Provide a safe haven for me at school when
I’m tired on my sleepless cold nights.
Needing minutes to lay my head down
Those frequent flyers needs for you to listen
Dedicated to my 10th year as a school nurse
And all the students I attended to.
I could still see every face in each line that came along
It touched my life and how I become
Every child has a story they just needing someone to listen
