Team Awesome
January 8-10
Back To Work
Your students are back to the hard work of learning. We are glad to see them and hope everyone had a restful break. Please encourage your child to focus on their lessons.
Social Studies
We will begin our unit on Canada this week. Ask your child about our neighbor to the north. Encourage them to complete all their reading assignment and to study their vocabulary.
Students should have turned in all of part 1 of Create a Country before the break. If your child has not please help me get them on track. Thanks.
Math
Jan. 7-10 WELCOME BACK to the NEW YEAR!
Regular Math: We will begin our unit on ratio and proportions this week. You can support this while shopping. Have your child find the "unit" cost of any item. This is particularly common in the grocery store; for example: 3 cases of coke for $12.99... How much will one case cost? Students will also work on "The Great Cartoon Blow-up"!
DUE TO THE SHORT WEEK WE WILL NOT HAVE A MATH MAINTENANCE THIS WEEK!
NO TUTORING THIS WEEK.
Advanced Math - We will complete "The Great Cartoon Blow-up" this week. We will also be working on the ratio and proportions unit. Finding the unit price (see regular math) while shopping will help support learning this standard.
DUE TO THE SHORT WEEK WE WILL NOT HAVE A POW THIS WEEK:)
Science
We will be working on the energy unit this week. Students will observe demonstrations on the three types of heat transfer-convection, conduction, and radiation- and then will write about those observations.
A study guide for the energy unit will be handed out this week.
Language Arts
This week in ELA, we'll be setting our goals for the coming grading period. Your child will assign him or herself two new pieces of writing. He or she will also have the option of re-working two earlier pieces of writing that were not as successful as might have been desired. Additionally, your child will set independent reading goals for the third nine weeks. Contracts detailing this work will go home with students Thursday night and will need to be returned to class signed. The students will receive summative grades for their work in both reading and writing every two weeks. We will also begin looking into folklore as a class.
