If the time available don't work for you please contact me to arrange an alternative day/time.

Language Arts

  • Reading - We worked on cause and effect in non-fiction texts. We focused on visualizing as our target strategy.
  • Grammar - writing using quotation marks
  • Writing - We focused on writing a personal narrative and using dialogue. Our trait focus was voice.
  • Spelling - Long i and short i words

This week we wrapped up chapter 1 with subtracting numbers up to the hundred thousand’s place. We also practiced several challenging word problems. Please see the math letter with your child’s homework.

Social Studies

This week in social studies we focused on map reading skills. We learned about different types of maps. We looked at elevation maps, rainfall maps and population density maps. We also talked about the five regions of the United States that we will be studying over the next few months.

We wrapped up our lesson on structures that protect plants from animals and extreme weather. We started a new unit on how plants reproduce. We learned about how plants produce flowers, cones and spores to reproduce. We will be having a short quiz in science over lessons 1,2,3 on Friday, Oct. 16. There is a study guide in the Friday Folder.

Think Energy Presentation

On Monday, Oct. 12 students will be having a presentation from Think Energy. This year, our class will be studying energy and we have been selected to participate in the exciting THINK! ENERGY with Efficiency UNITED and DTE Energy program. It will enhance our curriculum and allow students to apply at home what they learn in school. Your child will learn easy ways to use energy and water more efficiently. Improving your home energy efficiency will help you save energy, reduce your utility bills and protect the environment! After the presentation your child will be bringing home a Take Act Kit of energy efficient products. Sometime after Monday, please complete the Home Energy Worksheet with your child and return it to school by the end of the week. I will send home a letter and info again on Monday.

Predator Prey

We have our Predator Prey field trip on Thursday, Oct. 15 at Nub's Nob. We will be leaving Shay at 10:30 and returning at 2:45. Students will need to bring a lunch and a drink. I suggest students bring a large water bottle or two drinks, they get thirsty with all the running around. Students also need to dress for the weather. We are outside all afternoon. I'll keep an eye on the weather, but students may want hats and mittens.
