Testing
Dear Parents,
The week after Spring Break, students in second and third grade will be administered the Alabama Comprehensive Assessment Program (ACAP) in reading and math. This test is required by the state of Alabama and is designed to provide information about what students know in core academic areas.
The testing schedule is shown below. It is important that you have your child at school on time. If for some reason your child arrives at school during the testing times for their class, they will wait in the office until the test is completed and then will be scheduled for a make-up session. Please ensure that your child does not bring any electronic devices (cell phones, ipods, Apple watch, etc.) to school during this time.
As a parent, you can help your child be prepared to do his/her best on the assessment by doing the following:
Have your child at school BEFORE 7:45 am each day.
Do not check your child out of school or schedule appointments during your child’s testing. Third grade will test at 8:15 am. Second grade will test at 10:00 am.
Avoid stressful situations at home.
See that your child gets a good night’s sleep.

Future Planning
As our community is growing, ACS is making plans and preparations for the anticipated increase in enrollment at all of our schools.
We just recently completed the construction of our new iAcademy at Athens Elementary. This $19 million dollar school, located at 515 N. Madison Street, encompasses 66,000 square feet and can accommodate up to 600 students. Our students have had a great start to the second semester in their new "home".
Our next focus will be to add classroom space to HEART Academy at Julian Newman Elementary. Our HEART family will be moving into the Clinton Street campus at the end of the school year. ACS is currently working with architects on a plan for the renovation that will house 700-750 students. Check out the preliminary drawings of the renovated HEART at JNES below.
Other future plans include:
- Adding additional classrooms to increase capacity at Athens Intermediate School (4th-5th grade).
A new building will be needed in the future for our Athens Renaissance School as they grow and expand their offerings.
An additional elementary school in the eastern portion of the district will be needed in the future.
It’s a busy and exciting time for our community. Stay tuned for updates!
