Here's What's on Top at Buena Vista - January 11, 2023
Note from the Principal
Greetings Buena Vista Parents,
I hope you have not been too terribly impacted by the weather storms we have been experiencing here in the Bay Area. Please remember to take extra time on the roads and be patient during drop off and pick up. We will do our best as a staff to keep things moving along as quickly and safely as possible. Here is what is happening at Buena Vista!
I am really excited to share that Buena Vista Elementary is being recognized as a 2023 California Distinguished School. The California Distinguished Schools program recognizes schools for their excellent work in one of two categories: closing the achievement gap and achieving exceptional student performance. To select California Distinguished Schools, the California Department of Education (CDE) uses multiple measures to identify eligible schools based on their performance on the state indicators as specified on the California School Dashboard (Dashboard). Specifically, the 356 elementary schools who are being recognized this year were selected by analyzing data reported through the 2022 Dashboard, including assessment results, chronic absenteeism, suspension rates, and socioeconomic data.
I am very proud of this staff and community. We know it takes a village to support our students learning and growing and while I know our exceptional teaching and support staff is a large contributor to this recognition we know all great first teachings start at home. There is a lot to celebrate at Buena Vista!
Student Learning
This week I received a book recommendation from Mrs. Choy's first grade class. They recommended I read In My Mosque, by M. O. Yuksel. Their recommendation came with annotations of the parts they thought I would enjoy the most. It was great to see them learning about a culture that they may not be familiar with and finding similarities in their own experiences of meeting new friends and learning to help others, mosques are centers for friendship, community, and love.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day
School will be closed on Monday, January 16th in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Our teachers and staff will be sharing and discussing the contributions Dr. King made for social justice and equity over the next week. If you are looking for additional ways to celebrate Dr. King, I found this article from The Chronicle full of information about local celebrations in the Bay Area. In addition, here is a link for a list of books (some we have in our own school library) from preschool to high school level that tell about Dr. King's life and contributions.
Positive Parenting Program
“Raising children and youth to become healthy, confident, capable individuals is the most important and rewarding job parents and caregivers have, but sometimes it’s also the hardest job. That’s why proven strategies and support from programs such as the Triple P – Positive Parenting Program are here to help,” Nicole Young.
January is Positive Parenting Awareness Month. C.O.P.E. offers wonderful resources to support parents, including this monthly newsletter. This month’s column is focused on building your child’s emotional resiliency. Learn more about C.O.P.E. and what is offered here.
