Suwanee Express
DLD April
I hope you and your family are safe and having a great week. The students are enjoying the Suwanee Spirit Week, and I love seeing their post in the Discussion Boards. The teachers, staff, and I miss them so much. Below, I have attached some important updates from GCPS about Digital Learning, Promotion, and our new 4 day week of new content. I have also listed below some answers to common questions. Thank you for all your continued support! Please reach out if you need anything.
Your Very Proud Principal,
Mrs. Mary Taylor
Q: Can I come to the school and clean out my child's desk?
A: Right now, we are not allowing families into the building for the safety of staff. But, we will work out a protocol for future opportunities to retrieve materials from desks and classrooms. However, if you need an essential item like glasses, technology, etc please call the school or email me, and I will retrieve it for you. My email is: mary.b.taylor@gcpsk12.org
Q: I do not have access to wifi internet. How can I get support?
A: Please reach out to the school and or teacher. There are free internet options right now during this pandemic. We can get you this information.
Q: My child needs to talk to our school counselor is she available?
A: Yes, Mrs. Barnard is available to support. Please email her at christi.barnard@gcpsk12.org
Q: Will there be a 5th grade promotion ceremony?
A: Although we are very sadden that we are unable to have our traditional ceremony, the 5th grade team is working on some items to celebrate our amazing "Kings and Queens" of the school.
GCPS Update
SHIFT TO A FOUR-DAY WEEK FOR NEW ASSIGNMENTS
Just as students need breaks during the regular school day, they also need breaks when learning digitally. Beginning the week of April 13, GCPS will implement a flexible schedule every Friday through May 8. Students will receive no new assignments. Instead, the day can be used to review material taught, make up work or redo assignments, or participate in student activities (such as book clubs, creative offerings, extracurricular offerings, etc.) and family activities.
PROMOTION
GCPS wants to be sure that the move to digital learning does not have a negative impact on students. Therefore, we will use the following promotion criteria: K-8: GCPS will base promotion on a student’s understanding and mastery of the AKS curriculum for his or her grade level. If a student is recommended to repeat a grade, the school or teacher will discuss it with the student’s family.

Georgia Special Needs Scholarship/SB10
Parents of students receiving special education services in our school district have the option to exercise public and private school choice. Under a state law passed by the Georgia State Legislature in 2007, parents of students who receive special education services may request to transfer their child to another public or private school in Georgia if their child has an IEP and has been enrolled for a full academic year in a Georgia public school.
Letters explaining the program, as well as the transfer request forms are posted on the Gwinnett County Public Schools Special Education website for parents to view and download on this link.
