PHS Update
March 13th, 2018
March Madness Begins
In my experience, this is the point in the school year when time seems to speed up and suddenly, we are at graduation. We have this week, then a week off for Spring Break, then back for a week before April begins. April brings CAASPP testing, then AP, and then before we know it, we're talking Car Show, Yearbook distribution and prom.
But...before we get there, this week, we have PAC on Tuesday and PLN/PLC on Wednesday. PAC agenda will be sent via regular email on Monday. A few field trips and the Ashland trip are off toward the end of the week. Otherwise, a short update here as we turn our attention to...
Wednesday...We are continuing to monitor what Wednesday will look like, but we really won't know until we get there. We will be watchful. As we discussed at the quick staff last Wednesday, we encourage you to note the students who choose to leave just so you know who left. You would not have to adjust attendance in that case. If the panel discussion takes place as tentatively planned, some students may not be in class by 10:30am. We are hoping you will use your best judgement regarding taking attendance and when you do so. Some schools around the country who announced "punishment" have since adopted a less stringent stance.
Below is a repeat paragraph for a parent community night on Wednesday night. It is a reaction to a couple of off campus events that have affected some students. (see the flyer below this article.) We are hoping a few teachers would consider coming to share views as teachers or parents.
On a more serious note, we would like to invite parents and students to a community conversation about student choices and behavior after school and on weekends. There was a recent incident that raised concern for staff and administration. It specifically involved a gathering of high school students, many of them from PHS, at a weekend event. We would like to talk about the gathering in general and discuss ways our community might avoid similar occurrences in the future. Please come to the PHS Library on Wednesday, March 14th at 6:30pm. We will describe our perspective and likely have a few parents and students as speakers. We highly encourage your attendance!
- Don't forget Spring Break, coming up from March 19-23rd.
Please read on! Have a great week!
Career Days March 5th and 6th - Success!
Last week, our counselors showcased a terrific series of speakers and panelists from a wide variety of career fields. Sophomores from different classes attended and asked excellent questions. (see video loop below). The program included talks by graduates of Petaluma High who have gone on to successful careers in various fields, including Events/Media, Construction/Electrical, Real Estate, Wealth Management, Financial Services, Vineyards/Winery, Recruiting, Broadcasting and Psychology/Crisis.
This is a great way for our current students to imagine their futures as well as some how-to's and roadmaps to careers. Thank you to our remarkable counselors for putting this event together.
Varsity Baseball Says it's Time for a Walk Off!
The varsity Trojans were battling Saturday afternoon against a strong squad from San Lorenzo. After falling behind 3-0 in the first, the Trojans found themselves down 4-2 in the fourth. Though they rallied, they still trailed 6-5 going into the bottom of the seventh. After tying the game, it was up to big number 15, Bradley Smith. Take a look below...
