All Things SLI
Silver Lake Intermediate Oct 1, 2021
SLI Families:
Thank you to all our families to donated candy for our Homecoming Parade. It is appreciated. We were also able to hand out space themed bookmarks and squishy galaxy balls to our parade watchers.
Thank you to all the families who made a donation to the Lake Area Free Clinic by having your student pay $1 for two votes of which staff members' faces would make their way onto our SLI float as awesome astronauts out to find our float that E.T. floated home.
Thank you to the students who walked with us tonight at the parade. Look for some snapshots of the event in next week's newsletter.
Our first PTO fundraiser launched this week. Who is hungry for some pizza? Please see information in this newsletter for how to order pizza and support SLI students!
October 11, 12 & 29 are non school days for students. Oct. 28 is an early release day. Students are released at 11:55 am/no lunch served. Devereux Student Strengths Assessment (DESSA) Information
When we launched the OASD strategic plan in 2019, we reaffirmed our dedication to the educational quality and culture of our schools, including a commitment to support all students, in collaboration with families and the community, to develop their social and emotional wellness and resilience. Our OASD Graduate Profile defines the desired characteristics of an OASD graduate and also includes a focus on individuals embracing the importance of balancing various life aspects including academic, emotional, social, physical, and financial well-being, to lead a healthy and well-rounded life.
During the week of October 11, our 5K through 8th-grade teachers will use a new tool called the Devereux Student Strengths Assessment (DESSA) to better understand which life skills our students have already learned and which may still need to develop. DESSA is a research-based tool where teachers can indicate how often a student has demonstrated specific life skills within the past month. The DESSA evaluates life skills like persistence at challenging tasks, making good decisions, working well with others, and a variety of other skills that are included as desired characteristics of an OASD graduate in our Graduate Profile.
School staff will use information from DESSA for future planning and programming within the classroom, school, and district wide. Our goal is to ensure that your child is continuously developing the skills they need for lifelong success.
If you would like additional information about the DESSA, visit http://www.ApertureEd.com. If you would like to opt-out of this assessment please email Mrs. Marr at MarrJ@oasd.org by Thursday, October 7.

Parents/teachers will receive exclusive access to over 30 webinars on the topics of anxiety, depression, suicide, substance abuse, vaping and much more that they can watch on their own time and in the comfort of their own home.
Here is how it works – you share with parents/teachers that this service is now available to them for the 2021-2022 school year. Then parents register by
1. Going to https://www.yourchoiceprevention.org/webinars-members-school,
2. Clicking “join”
3. Create an account and enter code OCONWEB21-22 to remove the fee. Then they can access these webinars whenever they wish. A flyer that you can share with parents is attached.
With busy schedules, and COVID-19 cases on the rise, it’s hard to hold in-person events. These webinars are a great way for parents to have information available whenever it’s most convenient for them.
