The Summit SPARK
October~November 2022
October/November 2022
This Month is:
Global Diversity Awareness Month
Dear Summit Families,
Happy October and soon to be November! It is hard to believe that Fall is here already over. Cooler temperatures with more fall-like weather have arrived. We have had a busy few weeks with the walk-a-thon, our annual mum sale and curriculum night. At school, we have also conducted a Peace Parade to celebrate International Peace Day, as well as a Multicultural Day to celebrate the multitude of cultures we have here at here at Summit!
Please remember to dress for the weather. Students will be outside unless it is below 25 degrees and inclement weather (rain or snow). If you are in need of hat gloves or a coat, please let your child's teacher know. We have some new ones available for students to have if they need it.
Picture Day Retakes will be on November 10th
New Social Emotional Learning Curriculum
This year, we are introducing Sources of Strength, a program focusing on social emotional learning in the classroom. Please see below for more information!
Sources of Strength (SOS)
We are excited to be using a curriculum this year called Sources of Strength. At the core of the curriculum are eight Strengths: Family Support, Positive Friends, Mentors, Healthy Activities, Generosity, Spirituality (what lifts our spirits), Physical Health, and Mental Health (See Strength definitions below). Each lesson invites students to explore strength in their own lives and build resilience in order to promote health and wellness for themselves and others.
As a school, we want to partner with families to help each of our learners develop not only the academic skills, but also the social and emotional skills they need to be successful in life. These skills are interconnected in so many ways: noticing and regulating emotions can impact success on a test or homework assignments, understanding others perspectives is critical to problem solving in group work, navigating big emotions can help us advocate for our needs. Social and emotional skills are foundational for success in the classroom, with our friends on the playground, waiting in line for lunch, as well as beyond the four walls of the school. We are very excited to work with your students on these important life skills!
Definitions
The definition of 8 Strengths that are the focus of our Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Curriculum are below.
FAMILY SUPPORT
These are the people who support, nurture and care for us.
POSITIVE FRIENDS
Positive friends lift us up, make us laugh, are honest with us, and are there for us when we need them.
MENTORS
A mentor is an experienced person who shares their insight to help guide us, and help us draw on our own strengths to be the best version of ourselves.
HEALTHY ACTIVITIES
When we feel stressed, healthy activities-- whether they are physical, social, or emotional-- help us unwind, lift our mood, and gain clarity.
GENEROSITY
Generosity can look a lot of different ways, from donating money or time to being intentionally kind to other people. These acts of kindness towards others, big or small, can actually make an impact on how we feel about ourselves.
SPIRITUALITY
Spirituality is practiced in many ways, but at its core we consider what lifts our spirits or makes us happy. Thankfulness is a profound way to practice spirituality together, no matter what our cultural heritage and/or spiritual tradition.
PHYSICAL HEALTH
When we are injured, we don’t have to stay in pain. We can get better, with access to the medical care we need and deserve. Physical and social/emotional pain are often integrated and it’s important to take care of our bodies, hearts, and minds.
MENTAL HEALTH
Health is all about getting the support we need and deserve to help us when we are struggling. Our mental health is a very important part of living a healthy life, and oftentimes, getting together with a trusted person, a counselor, or a doctor, can help empower us to overcome internal struggles we might be facing.

Global Diversity Awareness Month
October
Global Diversity Awareness Month
This October, celebrate Global Diversity Awareness Month and pay tribute to the diverse minds and beliefs held by all cultures around the world. We live in a multicultural society and embracing the values of various cultures only strengthens our understanding and appreciation of the world. Open your mind to new views and ideas, appreciate cultural differences, and enjoy a fresh perspective you may have been missing.
How to Celebrate:
- Connect with people- make friends with people who had different cultures than you do.
- Learn about another culture- If you can't experience the "real thing" through travel or another person, listen to international music or watch movies from other cultures.
- Make an effort to stay informed- keep up with what is going on around the world.
