Message from NURSE
Greetings from Nurse Kelly:
We’ve been busy updating students’ vaccination records in our office.
October 23th is the exclusion date for those students who are not compliant.
Quite a few 9th graders are missing the required Hepatitis A vaccine.
We are still playing catch up with our 11th graders and their meningococcal vaccine compliance.
We will continue to work with our families to help them with this.
If you need assistance, please contact us at 913-993-6907 or 913-993-6916.
Important dates approaching at SMN:
September 26 & 27, our community Lions Club members will be assisting us with vision screenings for all 10th graders whose parents opted in for this screening event. Results will be sent home with your student IF they do not pass the screenings.
Thank you for your attention to this important announcement from the nurse’s office at SMN!
Senior Ring Information
Jostens will set up a display for class rings in the entrance Monday, September 25. Ring packets and information will be available for students to pick up.
Orders will be placed online (ring sizers will be in the packet), and orders will be due Sunday, October 1st at midnight.

September is Suicide Prevention Month:
September is Suicide Prevention Month and a time to raise awareness and discuss this highly stigmatized topic. In addition to shifting public perception and stigma, this month is also used to spread hope to people affected by suicide. Our goal as a district is to ensure students, staff and families have access to the resources they need to discuss suicide prevention and to seek help.
If you or someone you know is experiencing a mental health crisis, call or text 988 immediately.
If you are uncomfortable talking on the phone, you can chat the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline at 988lifeline.org.
You can also text NAMI to 741-741 to be connected to a free, trained crisis counselor on the Crisis Text Line.

Scholarship Night Oct 4 @ Shawnee Mission West

Panorama Survey
This school year (2023-2024) the Shawnee Mission School District is once again utilizing the Panorama Social-Emotional Learning survey to assess student’s perseverance, grit, determination, school culture and student-teacher relationships. The Panorama Social-Emotional survey takes approximately 30 to 45 minutes to complete and will be administered during the first semester. 9th and 10th graders will take the survey on October 17 and 11th and 12th graders will survey on October 24th. Parents/Guardians must consent for their student(s) to participate in the Panorama survey; this would have been done during the 23-24 registration process. Survey data will be reviewed at the district and classroom level to determine areas of strength, as well as areas where more instruction and/or support is needed. Once survey results are returned, parents/guardians are welcome to see and discuss the results with their students’ teachers, social workers, and counselors. Sample survey questions can be found here and here.
We encourage you to visit the Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE) website to learn more about how Social Emotional Learning benefits your child and their environment. All data is maintained by SMSD and will remain confidential. Please visit this site for more information about the Panorama SEL survey.

Bison Athletics
Shawnee Mission North Athletics
9/11/23
Shawnee Mission North students will be partnering with our feeder elementary schools to encourage community engagement and support of our athletic and activity programs. The purpose of this program is to build connections and relationships between high school athletes and our feeder school elementary students.
This year we are hosting two feeder elementary schools per home game; where we would love to post your school banner and have a family section designated for your community. Elementary students would be allowed in free and tickets for parents are $5.00 each. In addition, the students will be provided a Brickhouse Bound white t-shirt and face sticker(pending). More excitingly, they would be allowed to help form the tunnel along with the Band, PEP Club, Dance Team and Cheer Squad as the football team runs onto the field.
We look forward to all the “Lil” Santa Fe Trail and East Antioch Elementary students on Friday, September 22nd. We will also be hosting Lil Bison Cheerleaders!
Congratulations to Jim Sherwood, Varsity G/B Bowling Coach. Please take time to wish him the best! We have coaching vacancies to fulfill; the following positions are available: assistant dive, assistant track and field, assistant wrestling coaches, and varsity girls soccer.
Jaime Velez, long-time girls’ soccer coach (two stints) has resigned his position to coach top tier teams in his club soccer program. Thank you for your commitment to our girls program the past few years.
Hall-of-Fame Nominations are due by Monday, October 2, 2023, for this school year. We have already received some quality nominations and we will meet on Friday, October 13 to determine the class of 2023-2024.
NAIA Character of Champions - every year we’ve had the privilege of recognizing a staff member who exemplifies the (Core Values) of coaching. This year’s recipient is Varsity Football Coach, Andy Walter. Andy has established a respectable football program that strives to do what’s in the best interest of the individual, our team, our school, and community. The student that will represent SM North is Ciera “CiCi” Washington! Cici is one of the most genuine, nice, fun loving people you will meet. She is a true friend and teammate. Congrats to both of our nominees.
The boys soccer team went 1-1 last week, securing a 4-2 victory over KC-Turner and losing a tough game at LHS 4-2. North plays at LFS & at SMNW this week.
The varsity boys football team played a barn-burner vs Olathe South. Although we didn’t get the outcome we wanted (48-57) the team played exciting football; and played with strong will power and energy. The team travels to ODAC this week for matchup vs Olathe North.
The XC team competed in the Olathe Twilight Run and came away with a number of personal best! Top performer for North was Micah Blomker who placed 3rd.
The varsity volleyball program competed in two tri’s last week showing a lot of growth and improvement during the week. All four teams will play on Tuesday at Olathe West.
The girls varsity golf and varsity tennis team are improving daily. The teams are putting in great effort at practice and it’s showing at their competitions.
