PRINCIPAL AND VICE PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
We know the current spread of Coronavirus is on everyone’s minds. Our district has assembled a team that meets daily to monitor conditions around our schools and provide updates to the community. In an effort to have consistent messaging, communication with families about the Coronavirus will only be through the District approved messaging that is located on the District Coronavirus Information & Resources webpage. District messages will be updated daily around 4:30 p.m. and sent to all staff and parents.
Here at Bonny Slope, we asked all of our teachers to speak with our students on Monday about the importance of hand washing. Teachers showed videos to the students, and practiced these techniques. Teachers reported hearing from students that many of them don’t thoroughly wash their hands regularly, so we were glad to have this opportunity to talk about this life skill.
Here is one of the videos we liked: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IisgnbMfKvI&feature=youtu.be
If you have any hand sanitizer that you can share with your student's teacher we all would appreciate it!
As we celebrate Read Across America week here at Bonny Slope, it gives us pause to think about the power of reading in our lives. Think about the amount of reading you do in day-to-day interactions. From road signs to labels in a grocery store to texts we get from our loved ones, reading is a constant presence in our lives. Which leads us to think about one crucial factor in the reading development of our students: how much reading they do outside of school. An important part of reading growth happens when students are engaged in high-interest texts while at home. Taking 15-20 minutes at home at night significantly increases the amount of exposure our students get to words and vocabulary, no matter the form: independently, or in a read aloud. If you are looking for ideas for books, this website may be helpful! https://www.readacrossamerica.org
Finally, the Bonny Slope Food Pantry is running low on food. The 5th Grade Diplomats planned a Food Drive during the month of March. Students will be stationed in front of the school every morning with a cart to collect any donations. Please find more details later in our Paw Prints.
Working with you for kids,
Janet and Jim
