June 2022
Lewport IEC
From the Principal's Office
Dear Lewiston-Porter Intermediate Education Families,
June is filled with many fun events. It is the final lap and we are still going strong. This is a magical month for our students. It’s a time to celebrate all their accomplishments and successes. I can feel the excitement and energy throughout the building and it is awesome! It’s been great to have all our students on campus learning. The students have worked so hard this year, and I am proud of all their accomplishments.
This is a very exciting time. We celebrate all the students on a job well done, but especially our Fifth Grade students. They will participate in a Moving Up Ceremony on Thursday, June 23rd in the IEC Auditorium. At that time, the students will be recognized for their elementary years and all their accomplishments at the IEC. It has been an exceptional elementary journey from Kindergarten to Fifth Grade. The children grew in all aspects of life and are prepared for the next chapter of their education - Middle School. Congratulations to all our Fifth Grade families!
During the week of June 13th, all of our Second and Third Grade multi-age students will participate in a transition tour to the IEC. We will welcome all the transitioning students to the IEC. Thank you to our Third Grade teachers and classes that have enjoyed having the Second and Third Grade Multi-age students on tours of the building and in their classroom.
As another school year comes to a close, I want to take the opportunity to thank the staff, students, parents and community for their efforts in making the IEC the best it can be. Together, we make a difference in the lives of our children, and through them we are making the world a better place for everyone.
Enjoy the summer! Relax, read many good books, and spend time with family and friends. We will be open all summer and I encourage you to stop by and say hello!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Rodriguez

Lew-Port Elementary Summer Reading Calendar 2022
We all know READING is the BEST way to support your child’s learning during the summer months. This year, the Lewiston-Porter Elementary Libraries will again be partnering with our local libraries and Assemblyman Morinello to bring you a Summer Reading Calendar & Challenge! Visit our fantastic local libraries during the summer months: Lewiston Public Library, Ransomville Free Library, or Youngstown Free Library for any of their FABULOUS reading programs, special events, or to check out books to keep up on summer reading. It couldn’t be easier with each of the events, library hours, and contact information listed on the calendar! Then, scan the Lew-Port QR Code Poster at the libraries or on your Summer Reading Calendar, snap a pic and post to our Padlet to show you were there. Post as often as you visit to win prizes awarded in school the 1st week back in September. We challenge EACH of our students to post at least once and to continue reading for 15 minutes daily! And if THAT wasn’t enough summer reading fun, be sure to scan the Summer Reading Calendar link to register for the New York State Assembly’s Summer Reading Challenge, sponsored by Assemblyman Morinello. Students who pledge and complete reading for at least 15 minutes each day for at least 40 days during the months of July and August will be presented with a New York State Assembly Excellence in Reading Certificate. Watch for your child’s Summer Reading Calendar to be sent home by June 17th via both Seesaw School Announcements and your child’s take home folder. Be sure to hang it on your fridge!
Flag Collection
The IEC will once again be collecting American flags in need of retirement for the June 14th Flag Day Celebration.
Please bring any old, tattered, or torn flags to the lobby of the IEC, and place them in our
“Flag Retirement” barrel near the main office.
Intermediate students with family or friends who are in, or have served in the United States Military are invited to our Flag Day Celebration- Celebrating the Stars and Stripes of America! The event will be held on Tuesday June 14th at 9:30am at the Intermediate school. All veterans are invited to come prior to the ceremony at 8:30am for a coffee and doughnut reception in the cafeteria
We would like to know in advance the names of veteran guests so that they can be recognized and take part in the Flag Retirement Ceremony. Simply return the following information to the school- Student's name, Teacher's name, name of guest(s)
ORLEANS-NIAGARA TEACHER CENTER LITERACY CONTEST WINNERS ANNOUNCED 2022
Four students in Mrs. Khatib’s 4th grade class were recognized in this year’s Literacy contest. This year’s theme, I Can Make a Difference, provided students an opportunity to share how they, someone they know, or someone they read about can or has made a difference, whether it be at school, home, in the community or the world!
Sophia Fox, Rowan O’Shea, and Bella Robinson each received Honorable Mention for their essays. The top entry for all of Niagara and Orleans county went to Rowen Whitehead! She wrote a moving essay about her mother, Molly, who is a teacher. Rowen received a trophy, journals and other delightful prizes for her efforts. GREAT JOB KIDS! You make us proud! For the Birds

IEC Musical 2022
Our IEC Drama Club presented their musical, “Broadway Dreams” on May 11th and 12th. Forty of our students in 4th and 5th grade auditioned in the beginning of January for the show. They practiced 2 days a week from January through May to learn how to put on a successful show. “Broadway Dreams” takes place in a theater school in New York City. Young students learn about the history of Broadway, how to sing, dance, act, and what it means to be a member of a stage crew. They learn how every piece fits together, and how the collaboration of talents makes for a beautiful production. During the show, they also learned about friendship and being a family. The students presented the show to the PEC on May 11th, and to the IEC on May 12th. Finally, they presented their last performance on May 12th to their friends and family.
For all of our students, this was their first time doing a musical performance at the IEC. They worked very hard! The show was directed by Mrs. Zachary, who was also the vocal director, and Miss Yager, who was also the stage manager. Mrs. Jaruszewski was the choreographer. Mr. Daigler was the sound engineer and technical director. We would like to thank our Superintendent, Mr. Casseri, the Board of Education, our Principal, Mrs. Rodriguez, our Assistant Principal, Mrs. Krecisz, and our custodial staff for all of the help and support. In addition, we would like to thank the families for picking up their children after the many practices and for reviewing what we are sure were hours of practicing lines and songs. We know it is a commitment. However, the smiles on the children’s faces and the joy and excitement they have is well worth it! We are so proud!!!
Buffalove
I wanted to express my appreciation for your generosity and support of the food/supply drive. Everyone's commitment was incredibly helpful and allowed us to obtain an abundance of items in such a short time! Everyone's assistance means so much to me but even more to the community surrounding Jefferson Ave in Buffalo.
I was able to separate the amazing donations into two. Half of the items went to the Stanley Makowski Early childhood school on Jefferson Ave. The children had the opportunity to "shop the pantry " for supplies they needed within their household. They were ecstatic and extremely grateful for all of the generous donations. The other half I was able to take to Feed More WNY. The workers were very appreciative of the donation we proved to their community.

IEC Enrichment “Passion Projects”
On the evening of May 17th, close to 60 IEC Enrichment students had the opportunity to present their Passion Projects to their friends and family in the IEC Gymnasium. This special event was well attended and the gymnasium was packed from 5-6pm. Everyone could feel the positive energy, and the students had a great time presenting their projects that they had worked so hard on for the past few months. This event was the culmination of months of work.
Beginning in March, each Enrichment student in grades 4-5 chose a topic that they felt “Passionate” about. Some students chose topics that they felt personally connected to. Others chose topics that sparked their curiosity. Others chose topics they already knew a lot about, but wanted to share their knowledge and passion with others in the form of a project. Each student then had to think of a driving question that would “drive” their project and research.
Some Projects presented included:
Who invented Coding?
What training is needed in firefighting?
What is intelligence?
What is CDH?
Why were the Negro leagues created? among many others.
All students worked on gathering information on their topic and deciding which type of project they would utilize to present their information and ideas. Some students went the digital route and used Google Slides. Others used a trifold. All students then had to write a speech outlining the main points of their topic and present to others.
I would like to take this opportunity to once again thank all the parents and relatives that came out to support their son, daughter, grandchild etc. It was a special event and your attendance shows your support of education and learning.
