AP Environment Trip
On Wednesday, September 27th, students in Mrs. Martinez's AP Environmental Science class worked with Tiffany Caudle, of the Bureau of Economic Geology, to measure the topography of the dunes and beach using the Emery Method, map vegetation lines and shorelines using GPS, and observe weather and wave conditions at 3-mile cut.
Students at Van Vleck ISD have been involved in this research project studying the overall health of our beach systems along the entire Texas coastline since 2005 collecting data 3 times per year (Fall, Winter, and Spring). The data students collect is published in an annual report by the Bureau of Economic Geology out of the University of Texas - Austin and helps scientists calculate the rate of shoreline change.
This research is made possible by the cooperative effort of the Texas General Land Office and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. For more information on this enriching program, click here.
Bee Keeper Visit
Ag classes were treated to a presentation by Cheryl Wilson from Bee Love Texas. She shared all about the inter working of a hive and let students taste her honey.
Community Involvement
WITI- Women in Touch Initiative
Students from Van Vleck High school were chosen to represent VVISD as new members of WITI or Women in Touch Initiative. WITI is a collective initiative to gather female perspectives and empower women to recognize their potential. Grace, Ava, and Tia were personally invited to a luncheon with Superintendent Dement, where they heard from STP CEO, Ms. Kym Harshaw.
Ava shared a little bit more about the experience:
"It was an experience to remember! There were so many powerful, successful ladies who had such bright spirits. A woman CEO at STP spoke to us while we ate. She explained her story of how she got to where she is now. She’s moved from state to state, following amazing job opportunities then landed into South Texas. She is 1 in 3 of women in the entire United States to work in the job position she is in. Her story showed me that the pathway of life is not a straight line. It has obstacles and the way to overcome these road blocks is to work hard. I am so thankful for the opportunity and hope to experience more."
Youth Leadership- Matagorda County
4 students were chosen to represent Van Vleck High School as members of Youth Leadership Matagorda County. Cadence, Tia, Tatum, and Jahrius attended their first event this past week where they toured the STP Joint Information Center and their Emergency Operations Facility. They observed an STP Emergency drill and then were treated to lunch while hearing from the Matagorda County Emergency Management Coordinator, Amanda Campos. They then toured the Matagorda County Courthouse for a tour of the building.
Sr's to Seniors Van Vleck Community Connections
Founded by Grace Gibbens, Sr's to Seniors is a Senior Citizen's outreach-gathering for socialization, entertainment, and informative programs.
Grady Weathers: Scholarship Award
Freshmen student, Grady Weathers, has been awarded a $1,000 Scholarship from Texas Quarter Horse Association.
Texas 4-H offers a 3 year Futurity Project for members to compete at the District and State Level. An exhibitor takes a foal through 3 years of training, starting first as a Yearling, where ground work is completed to familiarize the colt with people and is taught how to work off commands and controlled movements. The 2nd year, the horse is shown under saddle, and expected to complete basic maneuvers and work through obstacles. As a 3 year old, the under saddler skills are refined and the horse is closer to being finished with basic training and can then go on to more detailed training, depending on the area the horse will be used in later.
Grady completed the program with his horse, Twisted Marey Merada, and was the highest placing Futurity completer that is a member of Texas Quarter Horse Association (TQHA). TQHA is a large supporter of the stock horse industry.
Campus Involvement
See You at The Pole
Students met in the Leopard Plaza for the Nationwide SYATP event.
Cheer Squad
Our VVHS cheerleaders have been busy helping spread school spirit. They are currently planning and preparing for the Mini Cheer camp that will be posted on October 7th and are excited to welcome 83 future Leopard cheerleaders to the camp. The mini cheerleaders will perform what they learn at camp at the last home game of the season against East Bernard on October 27th.
The Cheer squad continues to improve their stunting skills and are looking forward to showing more advanced skills at pep rallies to come. The State Spirit Competition is set for January 4th and we have our choreography day planned for Sunday, November 12. After that day, they will be working to prepare for competition.
