TEAM NOTES
6th Grade
Congratulations to all 6th grade Star Students!
For the final six weeks in science, students will be studying astronomy! During this unit, we will explore the laws of gravity, as well as all the celestial bodies in our solar system. We will learn about each planet - its place and its composition - as well as comets, asteroids, and meteors. We will also learn about the history of space travel and the components necessary to make space travel possible. In ILA, we are reading the novel Holes. The students are learning about character development, character traits, tone, and voice. We are also continually going over STAAR reading strategies. In social studies, sixth graders will round out their journey around the world by studying the geography, history, and cultures of Asia and Australia and Oceania. Math STAAR is May 14th! Please help your student finish strong by checking their math homework daily and helping them with TTM. The last five lessons of Imagine Math (TTM) are STAAR Review, so it is imperative that you help them keep up with their homework.
The students have been working diligently all year; let's help them finish strong!
7th Grade
Our 7th grade scientists are learning about ecology. This unit encompasses food webs, dichotomous keys, animal adaptations, and biomes. This unit will include fun projects! 7th grade readers and writers are busy researching a problem present in their ILA class novel and in our society today. Students will propose possible solutions to this problem and create a presentation that showcases the problem and its various solutions. The 7th Grade Reading STAAR will take place on May 15th. Math students will be taking the Math STAAR on May 14th. Mathematicians are currently pondering over problems with probability. Then, students will take out their light sabers to participate in STAAR Wars; may the force be with them! Our Texas historians have finished studying cattle, cotton, and railroads where we compared the significance of the myth and realities of the cowboy way of life. We also learned how the railroad influenced the founding of the City of Frisco. Students are now learning about the Age of Oil and natural disasters with the discovery of Spindletop in 1901 and the study of the Galveston Hurricane of 1900.
8th Grade
The finish line is in sight for 8th grade math students! From now until the end of the year, students will engage in a digital learning unit where they will use linear equations to create art and projects with programs such as Desmos, Prezi, and Padlet! Once we wrap up the digital learning unit, we will utilize the remainder of the school year to help students build a strong, solid algebraic foundation for high school. We will also revisit a few concepts from earlier in the year such as solving inequalities and systems of equations. Our ILA students have been reading a variety of texts - poetry, short stories, memoirs - about survivors of the Holocaust. We will finish this unit of study with an interactive scavenger hunt that answers the essential questions, how can one person make a difference when facing a social challenge and how do people communicate effectively? We are so proud of the collaboration and mastery that our PreAP ILA 8th graders put into their March Madness STAAR Reading Tournament. This two week preparation for testing required both analytical reasoning and team accountability. Next up, PreAP students will begin “The Challenge of Comedy” unit where students will have an opportunity to study satire, contemporary humor, classic elements of comedy, and creative writing. Our 8th grade Falcon scientists have wrapped up our unit on matter and have started learning how matter reacts to form all of the substances needed to make our world as well as our entire universe. Our chemistry unit is the final unit before the science STAAR. The science STAAR is one of the four required state tests for 8th grade and will take place May 16th. Once we complete our STAAR cycle, we will continue our journey of discovery as we build on our critical thinking skills using our process skills and lab techniques. Continue to soar to new heights Falcon scientists! 8th Grade U.S. History classes have been learning about the many different perspectives of America achieving Manifest Destiny in 1850. We will soon be studying Sectionalism and the events and issues leading to the American Civil War. Students are also getting ready for their Social Studies STAAR test scheduled for May 17th. Please encourage your student to review all notes, BOKs, and Moodle assignments. Let's Rock the STAAR!
