Creative strategies for reading in the secondary classroom
Students in the Education an Training classes at BCTAL have been reading Wonder by R. J. Palacio. After each reading installment and discussion, students are given a creative strategy to check for their understanding and deeper meaning along with extension resources to add to their reading enjoyment. This is a book the students like reading and it also incorporates the BISD CORE (Community of Respect Everywhere) values as well. Kindness activities have been included in each installment of the book club. After the book club concludes students will go to the movie to watch Wonder.

Dyslexia accounts for about 20% of our population. Those with dyslexia will need to learn differently how to read.
Bookshare.org a Benetech Initiative, has over 575,000 book titles including textbooks available for those that experience barriers to reading printed materials. Members can listen to their books on tablets, smartphones, computers and other devices. Qualified US Students with a verified reading disability will be given free access to this source. Non-students can get unlilmited access for $50 per year.
