Mission Statement
High Reliability Organizations
- "Organize its efforts to increase the amount and quality of attention to failure and data analysis"
- "Engage every member and level of the organization in the problem-resolution and prevention process"
- "Increase alertness to detail so all people can detect subtle differences in context by examining data and looking for predictions"
- "Focus on what the organization needs to do to reach the performance target on a continuous basis"
- "Act as a 'mindful' organization; thinking and learning constantly by empowering individuals to interact continuously with others in the organization as they develop their roles."
As I read this and the 5 factors, I began to think about Springhill and that we should also be categorized as a "high hazard" organization. No, we aren't an airline or a nuclear power plant but how many people are impacted by our success and failures? We have had the discussion before that what we do here is life saving work. We know that when we fail (yes, fail is a harsh word, but it is failure when we don't equip our students with the skills they need) students are at risk for so many negative things. It's not fun to think about those things but they should drive us to go one more round everyday ... because we know the consequences if we don't. This information makes me believe whole heartedly that we are literally saving lives everyday ... therefore we should be considered a High Reliability Organization. We should be an organization that consistently produces success. It also made me very happy to know that the 5 factors of a HRO are already things we do and are working to get better at everyday. Remember this as your why and know that we are creating a High Reliability School with the work that we are doing and the systems we have built. They are here for a reason and your attention to the DETAILS in our systems (PROWL, Team Meetings, CFAs, Interventions, Positive Behavior Plans, etc.) are crucial. I appreciate each one of you and how you give attention to all the details and hold yourselves accountable to each detail of our very important work.
I can't wait to learn more about building a High Reliable School and I'm even more excited to bring back the learning to a staff who I know will be ready and excited to implement for our students.
