Dear Friends
March 29, 2022
Last day of school
Due to a snow/inclement weather day earlier this school year, the new last day of school will be Monday, June 20. As a result:
- Friday, June 17 will return to its Professional Growth Friday 2-hour release schedule.
- Monday, June 20, classes will be released according to the half-day early dismissal schedule.
Juneteenth
Juneteenth is a recognized federal and state observance that falls on Sunday, June 19. According to state law, school districts across the state, will officially recognize the Juneteenth observance beginning in 2023. The Snohomish School District and all of its schools will honor Juneteenth in early June. As we get closer to this recognition, please look for more information from your student’s school regarding any planned events, activities and discussions in your child’s classroom. Juneteenth honors the end to slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865, federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas to take control of the state and ensure that all enslaved people be freed. It was two months after the South’s official surrender in the Civil War and two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation went into effect.
April Cultural Awareness and Recognitions: Arab American Heritage Month, Autism Awareness/Acceptance Month, Month of the Military Child, National Volunteer Month
In the Snohomish School District and community, we honor and recognize our diversity. Please join with us this April as we acknowledge Arab American Heritage Month, Autism Awareness/Acceptance Month, Month of the Military Child, and National Volunteer Month. As a reminder, though these months may be designated as times for specific recognitions, we encourage honor and recognition of our culture and diversity throughout the year.
Arab American Heritage Month was first nationally recognized in 2021. Estimates are that 3.7 million Americans have Arab roots and in the Snohomish School District Arabic is the 5th most spoken language. The recognition coincides with Ramadan, a holy month of fasting, introspection and prayer. The end of Ramadan is celebrated with a three-day festival known as Eid al-Fitr, one of Islam’s major holidays. Ramadan is Saturday, April 2, through Monday, May 2, this year and Muslims around the world will fast from dawn to sunset as part of their spiritual practices. If you or your student need support during Ramadan, please do not hesitate to reach out to your teacher or principal.
Also known as Autism Awareness Month, Autism Acceptance Month is also recognized in April. The first national recognition occurred in 1972 with Autistic Children’s Week. Christopher Banks, President and CEO of the Autism Society of America, expressed the following about the change from awareness to acceptance: “While we will always work to spread awareness, words matter as we strive for autistic individuals to live fully in all areas of life. As many individuals and families affected by autism know, acceptance is often one of the biggest barriers to finding and developing a strong support system.” This year also marks the 15th annual World Autism Awareness Day on April 2.
The Month of the Military Child was first recognized in April of 1986 as a time to acknowledge children for their selflessness and sacrifice as they serve our country as part of a military family. According to Military One Source, the theme for 2022 is focusing on the overall mental health and well-being of military children of all ages and providing support to help military families thrive. The Military Child Education Coalition provides information and resources for children, parents, and educators to support children in military families.
National Volunteer Month and Global Volunteer Month are dedicated to honoring the importance of volunteers and their contribution of service. Beginning as National Volunteer Week in 1974, participation and activities continue to grow exponentially each year. This year, the week is being held April 17-23.
For more information on recognitions throughout the year please check out this link from pta.org.

School & district news
- Listserv - If you would like to receive district and school newsletters, or if you have a high school student who wants to receive the school Daily Bulletin, please subscribe to our listserv subscription tool. For directions on how to subscribe or change your subscription preferences (for those already signed up), please click here.
- Facebook - Today, 10,000 Facebook fans receive regular district updates through our district's Facebook page - www.facebook.com/snohomishschooldistrict. This site is just one of many ways we communicate with our students, staff, families and community. Although we are aware of other Facebook pages, please note that this is the only verified Facebook page of the Snohomish School District and is where official information is posted.
- School Messenger - Our district uses the School Messenger automated system as a tool for communication with our parents, families and staff. School Messenger works with the district’s student-data system (Skyward/Family Access) to notify families and staff through phone and/or email of emergencies, critical school and district messages, school/district closures, inclement weather, attendance issues, underfunded student meal accounts and other events/activities. The overall goal of using this service is for parents and families to receive critical information about Snohomish schools - especially information that affects their children - in a timely manner. As long as we have accurate primary phone numbers and email addresses on record for our students in Skyward/Family Access, families should automatically receive these messages when they are sent out.
