What Were we Up to this Week?
Hello Families -
It was all about the insects this week in science and Read Aloud. We learned that insects must have 2 antenna, 3 body parts, and 6 legs. We looked at bees and ladybugs this week; exploring their lifecycle and fun facts about each. We sorted insects and non-insects and also made a class graph of our favorite insects.
Our Reader's Workshop time had us reading plays. Some students were working on a CVC decodable text about a Cat and Dog working together to catch a rat. Other students were working on a play about a giant turnip. They explored different vegetables, learned what a turnip was and used their retelling skills. In Math we began our unit on composition of numbers- addition. Students learned the words, looked at combining groups of objects, and explored the 3 different ways we can make a combination for the number 2. We learned about the voiced th this week. Voiced means that air moves over the vocal chords to make a sound- words like this, that, brother, mother.
We visited the Creation Station and worked with iRoot robots on Thursday. In pairs we programmed Root to move forward and push using a specialized plow attachment. Students explored a given set of objects then had time to free explore a variety of items of their choice. Next time we go back we will measure how many blocks long he pushed, and then it is all about what and how much can iRoot pull in a sled attachment. We LOVE using our programming skills to explore academics.
This upcoming week we move onto taking care of the Earth with Earth Day occurring on Monday. What can we do at home, at school, in the neighborhood? Why is it important that we take care of the Earth? In phonics it is time to look at the -ck ending on words as the chiCKs are close to arrival. We will continuing composition in Math, looking at how many ways we can make each number up to 9. Our caterpillars should emerge sometime this week so we will anxiously be watching them.
If you were not able to make it to the Parent/Principal coffee this week we have attached the presentation below. It provides some Parenting Tips and Ideas for raising healthy and happy kids. Click the link between the dots below.
Thank you for your support and partnership in your child's learning this year! Please reach out if you have questions or concerns.
Warmly,
Mrs. H., Mrs. Toms, Mrs. L, and Mrs. M.
Alphabet Fashion Show
The Fashion Show was a HUGE success! Thank you to all those that were able to join us for the Spring Alphabet Collection. We are so appreciative of all that you did from home to support them creating their "outfits", they were perfect! We have hung our vests in the hallway for all to see and will be sending them home in the next week or so.
VALLS Screening
Legacy will be administering the Virginia Language and Literacy Screening (VALLSS) to students in kindergarten between April 15-May 17th.
VALLSS is an updated screening tool that will replace the formerly administered PALS (Phonological Awareness Literacy Screener). VALLSS is more comprehensive and assesses students on a wider range of early literacy skills. Results are used to determine individual children’s learning goals, plan classroom instruction, and raise awareness of children who need additional support or instruction in early reading and literacy. Focusing on early detection and early intervention of reading difficulties is a required state-wide policy (Early Intervention Reading Initiative).
