The Fourth Grade 4-1-1

Week of April 18, 2016

The teachers say...

Our service learning project this year is working with Villa Esperanza. This week will be a time dedicated to our friends at Villa. We will be making weighted blankets, crayons, and coloring books.

Important Dates:

April 19 - Science report due

April 22 - Earth Day and field trip to Sepulveda Wildlife Basin (Free Dress-see below)

Earth Day 2016

The fourth grade will be going to the Sepulveda Wildlife Basin in Van Nuys. This is a great field trip where students are provided with binoculars and led on a guided walk through this wildlife refuge. We will also be looking at pond water under a microscope! Please send your child with a waste-free lunch this Friday. Free dress includes tennis shoes (no sandals or flip-flops) and a hat. Don't forget the sunscreen and a water bottle!

Academics

Math: We are working on topic 12, which includes adding and subtracting fractions, improper fractions, and mixed numbers.

English: Our grammar focus will be comparative and superlative adjectives and adverbs. For writing, we will work on the key components to creating an informative summary.

Science: We have begun our study of magnets, which included a fun lab using bar magnets and iron filings. We were able to see their magnetic fields!

Reading: As we continue with Island of the Blue Dolphin, ask your student about the book so far. They are very interested in this novel and have really taken to the story line. Students are also getting some good experience with inference.

Social Studies: We will be learning about how early California government changed once California became an official state in 1850. Final projects will begin in May. Information will be sent home in a few weeks!

Spelling/Writing: Lesson 21 words using the VCV pattern; test on THURSDAY, APRIL 21.

The Sunday Gospel: John 10:27-30

"My sheep hear my voice. I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish. No one will snatch them out of my hands. My Father is greater than all in what the Father has given me, and there is no snatching out of my Father's hand. The Father and I are one."

Faith is what we ultimately believe and trust about who we are and who God is. For Christians, faith is trusting God loves us, holds us, and supports us in being.
