For PK-8 Teachers in CCS Priority Schools...

Welcome to the 2016-2017 School Year!

A big welcome to all of you working so hard in our district's 17 Priority Schools. This newsletter will communicate any items of interest for or pertinent to all teachers in grades PK-8 at Africentric, Beatty Park, Broadleigh, Champion, East Columbus, East Linden, Fairwood, Highland, Leawood, Linden, Livingston, Mifflin Middle, Ohio, South Mifflin, Trevitt, Weinland Park, and Windsor.

Hopefully your year has gotten off to a terrific start. Remember, whether you are a new teacher or a veteran teacher, there is always someone there for you whether in your building or in the district; support is just an email or a phone call away!

Literacy Framework

You may know that all elementary schools voted on one of three literacy frameworks: Literacy Collaborative, Balanced Literacy, or Guided Approach. While their names are different, all three frameworks include components of quality literacy instruction. If you have any questions specific to the framework your school selected, please talk to your instructional coach or point person (identified below).

Since the majority of our priority school buildings are implementing the Balanced Literacy framework, here is an outline of the components:

Teacher Based Teams

By now, your TBTs should be up and running. Remember, the expectation from ODE is that you are meeting 40 minutes a week. While you can earn CEUs for your TBT work, someone must be the facilitator and submit a proposal through CiMS. Additionally, those who are submitting the proposals must be trained through Professional Learning & Licensure before proposals will be accepted.

Meet Your Support Team!

The Office of Innovation & Improvement has reorganized for the 2016-2017 school year. The department has three PK-3 literacy coaches who will be working with Priority Schools on a three-week rotation. We are focusing our support in Africentric, Broadleigh, Linden, Trevitt, and Windsor. However, even if we are not focused on your building at the moment, you still can access support just by contacting your point person or someone on the team!
