Technology Integration
Teachers have been using Chromebooks to enhance lessons for several years. The benefit of the 1:1 program is access. Teachers no longer have to schedule around Chromebook cart availability and can seamlessly integrate discussion, media, writing, and many other methods of instruction into a single lessons.
The 1:1 initiative also enables students that might not ave access to devices to use them at home. Most Coakley teachers use Google classroom which students can access from anywhere on any device. This makes keeping up with assignments much easier. It also allows teachers to assign more interesting homework. Grade 8 social studies had students watching a variety of news programs and comparing content. A grade 6 math class assigned Prodigy (an online math gaming tool) instead of a more traditional assignment.
We are aware that every family does not have wireless access at home. We do provide time after school Monday -Thursday in homework club, soon we will also have hotspot style devices that students may borrow and take home -like a book from the library. And most importantly, we would never punish a child for not having access. If a student or parent lets us know that their child does not have internet access at home we will always provide the necessary accommodation.
So we are all very excited for the opportunities that being 1:1 can provide for our students but we also recognize the importance of face-to-face interactions, meaningful discussions, and hands-on activities. The Chromebooks are one more powerful tool we can use to help provide our students with the best education possible!
