ECOT
The New Mexico Early Childhood Education and Care Department (ECECD) requires all preschool students to be assessed using the ECOT observation tool within the first 30 instructional days. ECOT training and the refresher course are available in the Canvas learning management systems as self-paced course modules. New preschool teachers must complete the new staff course and returning teachers must complete the refresher course before assessing students within the first 30 days of instruction. PED is no longer requiring the use of ECOT for kindergarten students. Please direct questions regarding this ECED requirement Cassandra Carrasco at cassandra.carrasco@ped.nm.gov. A few reminders:
- The ECOT system is not set up for the new school year yet. If anyone logs in now they will see last years rosters so please let your staff know that in case they are logging in now.
- The ECOT rosters will be populated using the new Nova Data Collection method.
- Please use your credentials you used from last year to access ECOT. New accounts will not be generated if the teacher is returning.
- New Teachers: You will receive an email once we have processed the data from Nova into ECOT.
- To get a new teacher an account their roster data must be in Nova to have an account created in ECOT. Teacher accounts are not created any other way.
- 45 Calendar days to complete the observation from the start of the program. This means your teachers can complete the observations in the 45 days and will have until October 13th to enter the data into ECOT.
- If ECOT access is not available please use the paper forms. ECOT access does not change these requirements.
Dyslexia Screening for First Grade
Per Senate Bill 22-13-31 NMSA 1978, all first-grade students must be screened for dyslexia by the 40th day of school and within two weeks of initial enrollment for students new to New Mexico. The screeners remain the same as last year:
• Teach Me to Read (English screener, printable PDF)
SCREENER COPIES SHOULD HAVE BEEN DELIVERED THIS WEEK. Please note: it is required to do BOTH levels/sections of the screener. We do NOT stop if they pass level 1. The scoring spreadsheet will go out to campuses next week.
