Technology/Social Media Tip
Are you interested in getting your kids started with coding? There are a few free tools that introduce kids to coding in a very accessible way through "block coding," which focuses on the logic of how coding works in a visual way.
Here are a few to explore:
- Scratch - From the MIT Media Lab, Scratch allows kids to program their own interactive stories, games, and more.
- Snap! - Modeled after Scratch and designed by a team from the Lifelong Kindergarten Group at the MIT Media Lab, Snap! enhances and extends the capabilities of Scratch for an introduction to computer science.
- Thimble - From the folks at Mozilla, Thimble is an online code editor that allows you to learn HTML, JavaScript, and CSS.
- App Inventor - Another great tool from the folks at the MIT Media Lab, a free and open source visual programming tool to create apps for android and tablets.
Smarter Balanced Assessments
Last Reminder...
SBAC testing is underway! Students in grades 3 – 8 and 11 in the Beaverton School District and throughout Oregon have started taking the Smarter Balanced Assessments in English Language Arts and Mathematics. In addition to content standards; these assessments are designed to measure critical thinking, problem solving and communication skills. The test results provide you, our schools, our district and the state with information about how well we are preparing our students for their next steps including college and career readiness.
Stoller students will take these tests once between April and June, 2017. Please refer to the following documents (also posted on our Stoller Website) to see when your child(ren) will be taking this assessment:
