HELP PREVENT THE MEASLES-VACCINATE YOUR CHILD
Recent news from the CDC-Measles Cases in 2019
From January 1 to April 26, 2019, 704 individual cases of measles have been confirmed in 22 states. This is the greatest number of cases reported in the U.S. since 1994 and since measles was declared eliminated in 2000.
Measles is a very contagious disease caused by a virus. It spreads through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Measles starts with a fever. Soon after, it causes a cough, runny nose, and red eyes. Then a rash of tiny, red spots breaks out. It starts at the head and spreads to the rest of the body.
Measles can be prevented with the MMR vaccine. The vaccine protects against three diseases: measles, mumps, and rubella. CDC recommends children get two doses of MMR vaccine, starting with the first dose at 12 through 15 months of age, and the second dose at 4 through 6 years of age. Teens and adults should also be up to date on their MMR vaccination.
The MMR vaccine is very safe and effective. Two doses of MMR vaccine are about 97% effective at preventing measles; one dose is about 93% effective.
Children may also get MMRV vaccine, which protects against measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella (chickenpox). This vaccine is only licensed for use in children who are 12 months through 12 years of age.
Before the measles vaccination program started in 1963, an estimated 3 to 4 million people got measles each year in the United States. Of these, approximately 500,000 cases were reported each year to CDC; of these, 400-500 died, 48,000 were hospitalized, and 1,000 developed encephalitis (brain swelling) from measles. Since then, the widespread use of measles vaccine has led to a greater than 99% reduction in measles cases compared with the pre-vaccine era. However, measles is still common in other countries. Unvaccinated people continue to get measles while abroad and bring the disease into the United States and spread it to others.

To 5th grade parents, From AMS
Dear AMS Parents and Students,
The mission and vision of AMS is to provide students with learning opportunities which support students to become strong readers, strong writers, strong independent thinkers, and lifelong learners. It is our hope our students are growing and learning over the summer months, and for this reason, we promote reading throughout the summer.
Reading in the summer is an important activity for your child’s intellectual growth and development. It encourages students to continue learning while still providing them with fun and enjoyment. What helps make reading entertaining for children is allowing them the freedom to choose books that speak to their unique interests.
AMS is asking for each child to read at least one book over the summer prior to our return in August. In an effort to promote student choice in reading and focus on the act of reading, we will no longer require students to create a product to demonstrate their participation or comprehension of a summer reading book. Instead, AMS students will participate in a celebration of literacy in their RELA class. It is our hope to build a community of AMS readers who enthusiastically share what they have read with their classmates, peers, and AMS staff.
Your parental support in promoting literacy skills is especially critical during the middle school years. On the reverse side of this letter, you will find information about summer reading for AMS students. Additional information can also be found on our school library website. We hope that you and your child have a wonderful time enjoying many great reads this summer! If you have any questions, please contact dawn.hindberg@humbleisd.net
Thank you,
Ms. Dawn Hindberg

DURING THE SUMMER 2019
● Read something you have not yet read from the genre of your choice. This may be fiction, nonfiction, poetry, magazines, graphic novels, etc.
● Share your reading with others! Tell your family about your reading at the dinner table, share with your teammates as your summer tournaments, meet a friend at the library to discuss your favorite reads, read a book as a family and discuss over ice cream- the possibilities are endless!
● You are encouraged, with parent permission, to share your reading on social media using the hashtag
#AtascaTigersRead
SEPTEMBER 2019
● Celebrate and share your reading during your RELA class Literacy Celebration Day. On that day, you will participate in activities to share what you have read with your RELA teacher and classmates.
● The date for your celebration will be announced by your RELA teacher when school resumes in August 2019.

Important Campus Procedures
- Safety: Due to new security measures, we will need to have everyone entering campus to have their ID. Please be patient as we work through the new system.
- Early Check-Outs: To reduce the number of disruptions during the end of the day as teachers are ending lessons, providing instructions for homework, and preparing for dismissal we ask that you not check your student out after 3:00 PM. Thank you!
- Attendance Reminder: When your child(ren) are absent from school, you must call the absence hotline at (281)641-2019, for each day absent and send a note to school the next day when they return to school. If the school does not receive a phone call or note from a guardian, the absence is considered unexcused.
- Dismissal: Grades K-2 and their older siblings are back car riders. Grades 3-5 students without younger siblings are front car riders.
Birthday Treats: Parents may purchase a frozen birthday treat for their child’s class during their lunch time. Frozen treats may be purchased from the cafeteria for 75 cents each to be distributed after the children finish their lunch. Please notify the cafeteria at (281) 641-2008 one week prior to the event in order to have enough treats on hand for all interested.
If parents wish to bring cupcakes to school, they may do so. However, please ensure that the treats are store bought as well as notify the teacher two days in advance so that the teacher has ample time to contact the parents of those with allergies arranging for an alternate treat. Parents may drop off the treats at the front office so that birthdays may be celebrated the final 20 minutes of the school day.
As a reminder of district policy, students are not permitted to pass out party invitations at school.
