Matthew 1: 18-24

This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about.
When his mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph,
but before they lived together,
she was found with child through the Holy Spirit.
Joseph her husband, since he was a righteous man,
yet unwilling to expose her to shame,
decided to divorce her quietly.
Such was his intention when, behold,
the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said,
“Joseph, son of David,
do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home.
For it is through the Holy Spirit
that this child has been conceived in her.
She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus,
because he will save his people from their sins.”
All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet:
Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son,
and they shall name him Emmanuel,
which means “God is with us.”
When Joseph awoke,
he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him
and took his wife into his home.

  1. Explore It! During Jesus’ time, it was frowned upon to marry someone who was already pregnant with a child. Joseph believed in the message from the angel and began a journey that would take a considerable amount of faith in God.

  2. Connect It! In today’s society, we as Catholics and Christians often find ourselves at odds with society’s expectations and norms. Do you, as a Christian, find yourself “going against the flow” to do right in front of God? How do you reconcile doing justice, but also stepping out of the norm within yourself?

  3. Reflect It! The Lord sent an angel to communicate to Joseph in a dream. In what ways has the Lord “spoken” to you? How can you tell when He “speaks” to you?

  4. Live it! Righteousness is morally right or justifiable; how do you stand up for your faith? For what’s right? Do your intentions line up with your thoughts and actions?.

  5. Remember It! “She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins. (Matthew 1:21)
