Hubbard Woods Update
October 25, 2021
Principal Update:
Dear Hubbard Woods Families,
On Friday, we had our first Town Hall of the year. Students gathered on the playground to share what they are working on in their grade levels. They ended the event by joyfully singing our Rah! Rah! Rah! HW song! Enjoy the video attached below.
We have had an uptick of families using Hamptondale neighbor driveways to turn around to pick up and drop off students. This is very upsetting to our neighbors as there have been near misses with pedestrians. Please do not continue this practice.
On inclement weather days, please try to drop off as close to 8:30 as possible. Students that arrive earlier will wait in the hallways or auditorium until 8:30.
Photo Retake Day, Tuesday,10/26
We had a successful Picture Day at Hubbard Woods on September 21st, despite the cloudy weather! As always, Stuart-Rodgers offers photo retakes if you aren't satisfied with how your child's photo turned out. Our retake day will be October 26th. Please tell your child to let their teacher know they would like to retake their photos on the morning of 10/26. It will be helpful to email the teacher in advance as well. No need to bring in the form.
Halloween Celebration, Friday 10/29
On Friday, October 29th we will be celebrating Halloween at Hubbard Woods! Just a few items to highlight.
Costumes: Historically, many of our students go home to change into their costumes during lunch from 11:30-12:30. Students who do not go home are invited to bring their costumes to school. All costumes will be put on after lunch. The following expectations are in place for costumes:
- Only regular safety masks can be worn on the face
- Any weapons, including facsimiles, must be left at home. In the event that these are brought to school, the teacher will hold on to them for the duration of the school day
- All costumes should be age-appropriate for elementary school (per school board policy)
- Please consider your child's mobility when selecting a costume; we encourage students to wear articles of clothing that are not overly cumbersome
- Please do not send accessories to school if it will be distressing to your child for them to not have them for trick or treating. It is an exciting day and things are regularly forgotten.
Ghost Walk: At 1:40, K-1 will parade in a clockwise fashion picking up classes via their outside doors (beginning with Wray) and then walk north to Chatfield, east to Burr, south to Laurel, and will end on the blacktop. We will circle the blacktop track and then watch the 4th graders perform a dance. We anticipate it concluding at approximately 2:05. At 2:10, grades 2-4 will begin the same way starting at Lee's room and circling in the same direction picking up all of the second, third, and then fourth graders. It will again end on the playground blacktop and circle the track. 4th grade will perform again for these students. Please note that if it is raining on Friday, the Ghost Walk will be indoors for students only. We will send out an email in the morning if it will be indoors for students only.
Sincerely,
Beth Carmody

Elementary School Principals Update:
Dear Hubbard Woods Families,
Student safety and well-being continue to be a high priority for The Winnetka Public Schools. This includes students’ travel to and from our schools each day. Earlier this fall, the Village of Winnetka, our Central PTO, district administrators, and students partnered to develop a multi-layered plan for improving bike and pedestrian safety. This includes bolstering awareness and furthering students’ understanding of bike procedures and protocols.
Skokie and Washburne students have been or will be, learning more about bike safety, including a student-created bike safety pledge (and video). These materials will also be shared with families of students in grades 5-8. A pledge for elementary students and families will be made available prior to the spring riding season, alongside materials such as recommended bike and walking routes developed in conjunction with the Village. The PTO also plans to promote safe driving practices for parents who transport children to and from school.
Additionally, all three elementary schools will host a bike safety event for second graders this spring. Typically managed by each individual school in the past, this event will now provide students a common experience and language throughout the district. It is our belief that a cohesive, district-wide approach will most effectively raise awareness and promote student safety.
Hubbard Woods families can expect more information on the elementary pledge and spring event later this year. As always, thank you for your continued support and partnership in ensuring our students’ safety both in and outside of our schools.
Sincerely,
Beth Carmody Nissa Cox
Principal PTO President

Volunteer Center - Make a Difference Day
Make A Difference Day
Recycle Your Goods for GOOD - Oct. 23 9am - noon
Recycle Your Goods for Good! The Volunteer Center’s annual Make A Difference Day collection drive is this Saturday, October 23rd. Drop off donations anytime between 9am to noon at the Indian Hill Train Station parking lot in Winnetka. This 19th annual event supports 15 impactful organizations and their specific item requests that make an immediate difference to their clients. The organizations’ reps collect the donations Saturday morning and deliver them directly to their facilities to start distributing the goods to their clients. Clean out your closets and drop off gently used and needed clothes, books, household items and more! The complete list of items requested and the recipient nonprofits is on the VC website https://volunteercenterhelps.org.
For those who have already cleaned out closets all year during the pandemic, perhaps consider dropping off some of the other “new” requests from our organizations like food (Northfield Township), new school supplies for refugees (Madonna Mission), diapers and formula (Infant Welfare Society) or NEW shavers and travel-size toiletries (Connections for the Homeless and Junior League). These are critical items for these people in immediate need.
Please bag, sort and label your items before you drop them off!
Visit our website HERE for more details on items requested by the 15 organizations.
Attached is the flier with all info if you wish to share.
