Enrichment February News 2023
The best part of your child's day!
Jennifer Ashmore, Art Teacher
The children are finishing up their Pop Art inspired by the American artist, Andy Warhol. We will be learning about Henri Matisse next. Matisse was a French artist, known for both his use of color and his fluid and original draftsmanship. He was a draftsman, printmaker, and sculptor, but is known primarily as a painter. We will be painting and creating collages inspired by Henri Matisse.

Let’s make some music! In MUSIC class, Challenger musicians practice and develop rhythmic skills, melodic skills and listening skills in age-appropriate, FUN ways. We make and experience music together using singing voices, instruments, movement, children’s books, and games. And we READ music, using visual representation and music notation. Every time students come to class, we: Sing, Move, Play, Listen (like musicians do), and Create!
In February, we celebrate Winter! Your student may come home singing songs or speaking rhymes about winter, snowmen, snowflakes and Jack Frost.
Second Grade is preparing for their program coming up in March, Peanut Butter and Cupcake creating lots of music to help tell this story. Fourth grade is learning ukulele! And all classes are enjoying singing, moving, and playing instruments along with wintery songs and stories.
Dancing with Snowflakes!
Snow Angels!

Happy healthy heart month! All physical education students are growing their jump roping skills. During this unit students will continue to learn about the cardiovascular system and risk factors for heart disease. Next we will learn to strike with short handled implements (ex tennis, pickleball, table tennis).
Simultaneously, the upper elementary students are continuing to challenge themselves through the state mandated Fitnessgram. Students will begin testing as February draws to a close. The Fitnessgram is a Texas Education Agency required test intended to gather data on and evaluate our students’ health-related fitness. The test also provides another opportunity for students to learn about goal setting and the hard work it takes to develop a skill.
We will take a brief pause for a country dancing unit in celebration of Go Texan Day (February 23 and 24). Be sure that your student is wearing tennis shoes to physical education! Exercise shoes are required to safely participate in P.E. class, which is held every other day.
