Safety at Clinton Valley Elementary
Dear CVE Family,
Recent events in Oxford have shaken us all to the core. The unnecessary violence in a school community is everyone's worst nightmare. Today, I felt it was necessary to talk to all of my students about inappropriate behaviors in school. We talked about the expectations that we have for every student and how doing inappropriate things that may seem threatening to others is not something we take lightly. We will investigate every situation that has made others feel unsafe. Some students talked about things that have happened in the past that made them feel unsafe, and my Social Worker and I address all those issues today. We want you and our kids to feel safe coming to school each day, and we will do what's necessary to ensure the safety of everyone in our building.
I know you all have received information from the district about safety, but I felt it necessary to give you specific information about safety procedures at Clinton Valley Elementary. We need to prepare our elementary students without causing fear. The ALICE training and activity book, I'm Not Scared, I'm Prepared by Julia Cook, is a way for students to learn about staying safe. The purpose of this book is to enhance the concepts taught by the ALICE Training Institute and make them applicable to children of all ages in a non-fearful way. Using this book, children can better understand what needs to be done if they ever encounter a "dangerous someone."
The story uses the experiences of "ant" students attending school. The students know that their teacher is always trying to keep them safe and has already taught them about fire drills and bad weather drills. The ant teacher shows the students a drill called the Sheep (the students), the Shepherd (the teacher), and the Wolf (someone dangerous). The teacher shows the students how to stay safe if someone dangerous is inside the building. Below is a link to the Pdf version of the book.

Our drills are based on the concepts that the "ant" teacher shows her students. The drills include BOTH a lesson from the book, "I'm NOT Scared, I'm Prepared!" and an opportunity to practice. The purpose of this book is to enhance the concepts taught by the ALICE Training Institute and make them applicable to children of all ages in a non-fearful way. Using this book, children can better understand what needs to be done if they ever encounter a "dangerous someone." Unfortunately, in the world we now live in, we all must ask ourselves the essential question: What options do I have for survival if I ever find myself in a violent intruder event?
Please know that your child's safety is ALWAYS our #1 priority. The staff and I truly love and protect your children like our own.
Please Take Time to Talk to you Student about Violence
Message from the Tech Dept......
Inappropriate videos have been accessed across the district, so the technology department sent out a message to let us know the next steps. The following is the message from the district.....
We have students accessing inappropriate YouTube videos on their district laptops. Currently, all student laptops are set to run YouTube in restricted mode. This means students should be able to access only videos that are appropriate, but the classification of restricted and nonrestricted videos is done by YouTube and is out of district control.
We will be shutting down student access to YouTube immediately until we can investigate further and determine the cause. This will impact all student laptops onsite as well as those being used at home. If / when we are able to determine safe student access to YouTube it will be re-enabled.
Our first priority is student safety and we simply cannot allow students to have access to inappropriate content.

What's Happening in 2nd Grade with Mrs. Chimenti....

What's Happening in 4th Grade with Mrs. Phillips...
Mrs. Phillips' class learned about how our actions and words affect those around us this week during the positivity project. As a fun activity, we stuck papers on our backs and went around the room writing kind words to each other. The students expressed how happy and great it made them feel to read these kind words. It was a very powerful activity to realize how your words can truly affect those around you.
