From the Head of School...
Dear Summit School Community,
I hope that you are enjoying your break and getting excited for the 2022-23 school year at Summit School. We are working hard to prepare including lots of new technology updates, new staff, and some new building updates.
Please take a look at the 2022-23 Summit School Student & Family Handbook. There have been some revisions to the student dress code, wearable tech such as iWatches, and updates to the bullying policy, as well as the addition of our Codes of Conduct for both adults and students.
We look forward to seeing you on Monday, August 1 from 5pm to 6:45pm for Back to School Night.
Thank you for being a part of our Summit Community. Enjoy your summer and thank you for all you do.
Sincerely,
Dr. Stephanie Nardi
Head of School
Staff Updates
Couch Hough
Over the summer, Coach Hough made the decision not to return this year as our physical education teacher. We have wished him well and we will miss his presence on campus. We have hired a new physical education teacher, Mr. Ernest Shand.
Preschool Structure Change
Lastly, there has been a shift in structure for Summit Preschool. We will not be filling the Assistant Head of School Position. Like the rest of our school, the preschool will now be set up with a Coordinator/Mentor. I am pleased to announce that Diana Clark, in addition to teaching PreK, will serve as the Preschool Coordinator/Mentor. The Coordinator/Mentor role primarily supports the teachers in that grade level band, works on level specific projects and activities, and represents those teachers on an advisory committee.
For concerns, matters of behavior, or academic needs at all grade levels, the homeroom teacher is always the first point of contact. After that, guardians are asked to reach out to Dr. Nardi or Carol Mauermann for assistance.
We look forward to seeing you all on campus soon. Thank you for all you do for Summit School.
Welcome Ernest Shand to the Summit Team!
Summit School Community Partnerships
Dear Community Member, Summit School is pleased to announce that we are starting a community partner program with businesses in our local community. We know that connections in the community are invaluable to the success of our school and our local businesses. We would like to invite you to become a Summit Community Partner. This partnership requires no donations or financial support. Instead, we ask for mutual participation. Here is how it works. You agree to be a Summit Community Partner by posting our Summit School Community Partner flyer, poster, or our Summit School brochures in your business. We add your logo to our Summit Community Partners website page and our weekly school digital newsletter. We will reach out to you when we have campus events that you may be interested in for the purpose of sponsorship, table displays, or other connections. We offer you the opportunity to add items or information to our new family welcome bags. To get started, please complete this form or reach out to Kyle Allen, Director of Admissions and Marketing at kyle.allen@summitschoolaz.org. In addition, please send your business logo as a .png or .jpg file to the email address above. Want to know more about Summit School? We would be happy to give you a tour of our campus. If you would like a tour or have any questions, please email Kyle Allen or call 480-403-9506. Thank you for your consideration. In Partnership, Dr. Stephanie Nardi Head of School
Conversations of Race and Allyship with Brooks E. Scott
Brooks has facilitated dozens of courses on Managing Unconscious Bias to thousands of participants. He is a certified Crucial Conversations instructor, a facilitator of the Leadership Circle 360 Profile Assessment, and a trained suicide hotline counselor. He is a strategic advisor in management, building teams, designing strategy, and implementing training programs to address poor communication and lack of engagement among teams.
The Conversations of Race and Allyship presentation will focus on 7 main points.
- Processing different perspectives around common phrases that could unintentionally cause harm.
- Understanding how trauma affects the way that we talk and listen to people who are experiencing it.
- Teaching the definition of how "to ally"---an ally is not something that one can simply be; it is something that one does.
- Identification of steps that we can take as an Ally, and what to do when we mess up.
- Communications training for teachers (or families) on how to frame sensitive conversations about race and how it shows up in our reading materials, curriculum, and school discussions.
- How to notice and spot when and how our own emotions are triggered in sensitive conversations.
- Techniques to use prior to the start of sensitive conversations so that we can create space for healthy dialogue and communication.
This event is limited to 24 participants. A reserved spot is required. If you are interested in attending, please RSVP below.

Referral Credits and IBE
I hope this message finds you enjoying your summer break and hopefully staying cool with these toasty temps rising. As we begin to plan for the upcoming school year, we figured it was a great time to remind you of a couple awesome programs that Summit offers.
Yes, we are still offering a $1,000.00 referral tuition credit for each new student (non-sibling of current student) who is referred to Summit for the 2022-23 school year. The credit will be applied to your FACTS account after 2 months. We greatly appreciate your referrals!
Also, if you or someone you know owns or is a decision-maker in an LLC or S-Corp, there are some new, beneficial tax changes (See message below from IBE).
Corporate Donation season is here and there have been some HUGE things happening at IBE. As you may have heard, our very generous S-Corporations could potentially receive a deduction on their Federal tax forms in addition to the State dollar-for-dollar tax credit.

Campus Safety
Summit School has an Emergency Response Plan that serves as a guide to help staff and safety partners respond swiftly should a crisis arise. In addition to this plan, our campus has a single point of entry system at the front office.
Guardians are assured that Summit’s safety and security planning and procedures follow the latest available protocols, and that all staff are trained and drilled to perform them in the event of an emergency.
Should an emergency occur while you are on campus, it is important that you are familiar with the following terms:
Lockdown
During a lockdown, all school interior and exterior doors are locked, and all students and staff are confined to a safe room. No entry or exit is permissible until an “all clear” signal is given. This takes place when there is a possible threat inside or outside of the school.
Evacuation
An evacuation may be necessary for the following situations: arson, fire, explosion, hazardous materials leak/spill, bomb threat, or damage to the building. In some cases of a dangerous person on campus, staff and students may be directed to evacuate campus if a safe evacuation path is available.
Shelter-In-Place
This refers to taking refuge in an area inside the school when there is not adequate time to evacuate the school or release students. For example, this procedure may be implemented inside for hazardous materials that have been released into the atmosphere.
