WBMS Friday Notes

Reflections from Ms. Williams
WBMS Parents and Guardians –
What a great Webb Way Spirit Week we have had! Students and staff embraced dressing up and having fun with bright colors, hats, tacky wear, and sports jerseys. We celebrated this month’s Webster Award Winners, and I witnessed a lot of inquiry based lessons in our classrooms. We are intentionally developing experiences that focus on problem-solving often in the form of games and challenges and our students are enthusiastically leaning in.
Your students may have come home and mentioned that we have instituted a schoolwide policy for no hall passes during the first and last 5 minutes of class. The beginning and end of each class period are critical instructional opportunities that we do not want any of our students to miss. This is often when teachers hook students into the lesson and go over the directions for the day and then summarize the learning and go over homework expectations; however, once a teacher moves into the work period of the lesson, students who have an urgent need to use the restroom or visit the office are allowed to do so following the regular procedure of signing out and using a hall pass. Remember that we changed our bell schedule two years ago to increase the time students had to move from class to class from 3 to 5 minutes so they could use that time to take care of needed business outside of instructional time and decrease their stress over being tardy.
Please mark your calendars for two big events:
- Literacy Night – next Tuesday, January 28th. It is much more than a book fair!
- Musical – Madagascar Jr. – next weekend – January 31st and February 1st. These students have been practicing for months and they are ready to entertain us.
Enjoy your weekend together!

Flu Season Is in Full Swing…
Student Health Services
Widespread Flu in Georgia
January 2020
Unfortunately, Georgia is experiencing widespread flu. According to the Georgia Department of Public Health (DPH), the predominant flu virus currently circulating is a B/Victoria strain that doesn't usually occur until the end of the flu season, in early spring. Although flu B viruses can infect anyone, they generally strike children and young adults more than the elderly. Vaccination is the best prevention against the flu for all ages, and the B/Victoria strain is included in this season’s vaccine. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), DPH and other health officials are encouraging everyone to protect yourself and prevent the spread of flu. They are stressing, if you have not gotten a flu vaccine yet, do no wait any longer. It is not too late!
“Every individual over the age of six months should get a flu vaccine – not just for their own protection, but to protect others around them who may be more vulnerable to the flu and its complications,” says Kathleen E. Toomey, M.D., M.P.H., DPH commissioner. “It takes about two weeks after vaccination for antibodies that protect against flu to develop in the body, so now is the time to get a flu shot.”
