Mrs. Edward's Guidance Lesson
This month during social/emotional learning lessons, students worked on self-talk and Growth Mindset concepts. We have an internal dialogue that can be a powerful influence on perspective and behavior. Learning positive ways to utilize self-talk can be beneficial in problem solving, self-esteem, and managing stressful situations. Research shows that growth mindset can improve student’s test scores, help them overcome academic challenges and engage in deeper learning strategies (Walter, 2014). Students worked to identify ways to incorporate positive self-talk and mindset to influence daily decisions. The school counselor provides an activity to further learning. Ask your student about this activity and the things they’ve learned from it.
Reading & Writing
In 5th Grade will be starting Unit 6: Lessons Learned. Students will focus applying background knowledge and life experiences to gain deeper understanding about a theme.
Essential Question: What lesson can be learned in the face of challenge?
Enduring Understanding:
patterns help us understand our world and make predictions.
readers gain insight by comparing different authors’ approaches to the same topic or theme.
through collaborative conversations, a text is more deeply synthesized.
Writing:
We are just starting the persuasive writing unit. This unit will focus on global conservation issues. Students will choose a topic they are passionate about. Students will then make a public service announcement using Powtoons or Green Screen to share their findings.
Enduring Understanding:
writers structure and organize their opinion essay with supporting reasons and information.
writers elaborate by explaining how their evidence supports their thinking.
writers draft several introductions and conclusions as they revise their essay.
Math Workshop
The fifth graders continue working on Unit 6: Multiplication and Division of Fractions
Essential Questions:
- How can a whole be partitioned into parts?
- How can different strategies be helpful when solving a problem?
Enduring Understanding:
- Mathematicians understand that mathematical operations are used in solving problems by choosing, combining, and applying effective strategies.
Last week we worked on the following targets:
- I can multiply a whole number by a fraction using visual fraction models.
- I can multiply a fraction by a fraction using visual fraction models.
- I can interpret the product of fraction times a whole number.
- I can find the area of a rectangle with fractional sides by tiling it and show that the area is the same as multiplying the side lengths using visual fraction models.
- I can find the area of a rectangle with fractional sides by multiplying.
Our new targets are the following:
- I can divide unit fractions by whole numbers using effective strategies.
- I can divide whole nubmers by unit fractions using effective strategies.
- I can divide unit fractions by whole numbers using effective strategies in real world problems.
- I can divide whole nubmers by unit fractions using effective strategies in real world problems.
Social Studies
The fifth grade continues to work on understanding and developing the learning about the U.S. government. The standards that we cover are:
3a Discuss the importance of political documents such as The Constitution and The Bill
of Rights.
3b Explain how laws are developed, how the government was established and how the
powers of the government are acquired and maintained in the United States.
3c Describe how the federal systems separates the power of federal, state, and local
government in the U.S. and how legislative, executive, and judicial powers are
balanced.
Students are studying The Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and the three branches of the federal government - Legislature,Executive, and Judicial.
