HOURS & SALARY
*37-40 hours per week
*£12,000+ per year (as a Senior Visual Merchandiser you can earn £20-25,000 per year)
WHAT DOES THIS ROLE INVOLVE?
*Coming up with designs for window displays or floor plans.
*Considering the best use of space and lighting.
*Distributing or using a branded visual merchandising pack for all branches.
*Showing the Sales Assistants how to display the items.
*Creating hand drawn or digital design ideas.
*Setting up and taking down old displays including dressing the mannequins.
*Feeding back to the head office and buyers.
*Gathering all the necessary materials to create your displays.
WHAT QUALITIES/SKILLS DO THEY LOOK FOR?
*Design is a key part of a Visual Merchandiser's role so you will need creative ideas, attention to detail and technical drawing skills which may also involve computer-aided design.
*It's also important to be up to date with the current trends in fashion as well as culture.
*Good teamwork skills are a must as you need to work together to ensure the displays are ready by the deadline.
*You will also need stamina as you will be on your feet a lot and working late at night.
HOW DO I GET THIS ROLE?
One way of getting into Visual Merchandising is to work your way up through retail jobs or via an apprenticeship.
Another option is to complete a higher education qualification such as a degree in Fashion and Visual Merchandising or a Level 4 Diploma in Merchandising for Fashion Retail.
WHAT OPPORTUNITIES ARE THERE BEYOND THIS ROLE?
You could go onto become a Display Team Leader or a Visual Merchandising Manager. Alternatively you can even go into interior or exhibition design or work as a Freelance Visual Merchandiser.
