Celebrations and Treats
We will be following the Valparaiso Community Schools Wellness Policy this year (policy 8510). Of particular note it states: "All school-sponsored events and celebrations of special occasions shall include healthy beverages and/or food among the choices available to participants."
The translation of this policy for you as parents relates to birthday treats in the classroom. We encourage non-edible treats for birthdays. If edible treats are desired, they must include a healthy option. Here are some heathy options to consider:
- Fresh Fruits and Vegetables, Crackers, Raisins, Pretzels, Juice
Mr. Berta, our VCS Superintendent, has reconvened a committee to review our district Wellness Policy in the coming year. As changes become known, we will keep you informed.
PTO News
Popcorn Parking Festival – Our annual Popcorn Festival parking fundraiser was a great success and raised $1842 for our children! This is all thanks to the volunteers who generously gave their time to help us out! We want to thank Ken Evans, Natalya Finley, Brad Hallal, Bob & Cindy Kallen, Miranda & Mike Kwiatkowski, Stefanie & Frank Rigg, Joyce & Ryan Sandberg, Kate & Shaun Shifflet, Jeanie Sienkowski, Jamie Tharp, Chris Topping, Jenna Velasco, Melissa Wayte and Becky & Jim Whited. We would like to send out a huge THANK YOU to all of them as they made the day run smoothly, and our 5th grade students and their parents will certainly appreciate their hard work when Camp Tecumseh comes around! Also, thank you to Lisa Taylor for taking on the responsibility of coordinating the event – awesome job on the event!!
Central Spiritwear – The spiritwear order forms were due on September 11th, however, we will accept late orders up until Monday, September 16th. Please make sure that you have your form turned into the office on Monday if you are interested in purchasing spiritwear.
Calendar Magnets – Families should have received their calendar magnets this week. A big thanks goes out to Dena Smiley for doing a great job on them!
Market Day – The Market Day program has a new chairperson. A big thank you to Julie Ramirez for taking on this role.
2013-2014 Student Directory – We are still looking for businesses to advertise in the directory. Please contact Keri Parks at 476-4044, if you have any leads.
National Walk to School Day – The walk-to-school day is October 9th this year. If you are interested in being a leader at one of our stops, please contact Danielle Berg-O’Reilly at 219/246-8109. Locations will be determined after we coordinate our volunteers.
