Principal's Message

Dear Parents,

This Thursday, we will hold the second of our two Back-To-School Open Houses. A schedule for the K-4 Open House is below. It was wonderful to meet or reconnect with so many of you this past Thursday at the Open House for grades 5-8. I mentioned in my overview presentation that I am curating all of the materials presented for your reference. You will be able to find them on a separate page on our website. I will share the link to that page in next week's Happenings.

An area where we consistently strive to enhance our partnership with you is through clear, timely and useful communication. I realize that in a school community that serves preschoolers through eighth-graders, not everything that I write may apply to your family. To that end, you may have noticed that I have now divided this newsletter into sections with separate headings to make it easier for you to decide whether it is something you want to pay attention to. Additionally, I'm excited to announce that, in addition to our traditional paper copy calendars, we have developed stand-alone Google calendars for our A-F letter days, Clubs and Activities and the popular Year-At-A Glance. You can find the calendar links below in the links section. I'd like to take this opportunity to thank two of our parents, Amy Cohen and Thomas Marshall for their help in moving this project forward.

Yours in partnership,

Joel Bates,

Principal

2019 FSS Open House for Grades K through 4

On Thursday, September 12, we look forward to welcoming you to Open House at FSS for Grades K-4. We have developed the schedule below to try and stagger the evening for families with children at multiple grade levels. Please note that this evening is intended to provide you with a broad overview of our curriculum and expectations over the course of the school year. While the schedule for Thursday does not allow for individual parent conference time, please know that you may always reach out to your child's teachers to schedule an individual conference to address any concerns you may have. Also, detailed below, childcare will be available in the Sawyer Wing Cafeteria.

6:00 - 6:30 Presentations in Sawyer Wing classrooms with teachers - Grades K-2

6:35 - 6:55 Presentations for all parents K-4 in Aud. with specialist teachers (art, music, etc.)

7:00 -7:25 Presentation from FSS administration for all parents K-4 in Aud.

7:30 - 8:00 Presentation in Emerson Wing classrooms with teachers - Grades 3 & 4

Open House Childcare Available

As a fundraiser for 8th-grade activities, the 8th grade will be providing childcare in the Sawyer Wing cafeteria during the K-4 Open House. In order for us to appropriately plan for the amount of supervision please use this link to register.

You do not need to have preregistered to take advantage of this service but it is helpful for us to be able to plan for an appropriate number of volunteers.

Parking at FSS Evening Events

Please note that we are asked by our first responders to pass along that parking is only allowed on the right side of Mechanic Street during high-attendance events on campus, including our Open House events. When cars park on both sides it limits, if not prohibits, emergency vehicles from getting through should there ever be a need.

Families can find additional parking in the lot and on the blacktop facing the Sawyer Wing gym.

A Reminder from the Office

If you haven’t already done so, please complete your Returning Student Registration. Your child’s individual snapcode was emailed to you on August 8 and August 30. Please reach out to Melissa Clericuzio (mclericuzio@nrsd.net) if you need your code resent. Please do not complete a New Student Registration

Health Office Reminder

When delivering your child’s medication to the health offices, it must be accompanied by a current physician’s order for the school year and a parent medication consent form, which can be printed from the virtual backpack on the homepage of the FSS website. Allergy action plan/ individualized health care plan forms can also be found in the virtual backpack.

Your child’s medication cannot be administered at school without a current physician’s order and a parent consent form, which need to be submitted at the beginning of every school year. These forms may be faxed directly to the health office secure fax lines:

Please reach out to Ms. Frostholm or Mrs. Hendley with any questions.

Parents Advisory Council (PAC)

We have a couple of exciting announcements to share with you. The Florence Sawyer Discount cards are in and we will be selling them this Thursday at the K-4 Open House. We will have a table set up in Florence Sawyer so be sure to stop by and get your cards. We take Cash, Check, Venmo and Paypal for payment. Do not worry if you can not make it, we will be sending order forms home with the students this week.

PAC is changing the way we collect information for the school directory. This year you can submit the information on line at https://fsspac.membershiptoolkit.com. Please ensure this information is updated no later than September 30th to be included in the directory. Instructions can be found here and on the Virtual Backpack. The instructions have great tips and reminders to ensure your data is included in the directory. You will still order your directories as you have done in the past. We had a delay with the printer and were not able to get the forms in last week. They will be coming home this week and will be posted on Facebook and in the Virtual Backpack.

We have a lot of great events in the works for this year and we would love to have you join us for first planning meeting of the year on September 10th at 9:00 am in the Florence Sawyer Cafeteria. Our meetings will typically be the second Tuesday of the month and the times will alternate between 9:00am (September meeting) and 7:00pm(October Meeting). We have a lot of great opportunities to Volunteer! If you have questions about PAC you can email us at FSSPAC@nrsd.net or join our Facebook page at FSS PAC Florence Sawyer School Parents Advisory Council.
