Newsletter Week 6 Term 2

Sacred Heart School Petone Wednesday 9th June 2021

Tena koutou Nga whanau

I hope you all enjoyed the long weekend with your family! We have a short but busy week coming up at school.

A huge fa’afetai to all the students who were involved organising and leading the Samoan Language Week activities last week - within the school and the Petone library visit. Malo lava ! You did a great job! Thanks also to Fo'i Bell and her helpers for the amazing chop suey lunch!

This week we celebrate our school Feast Day with Mass at 9.30am. You are all welcome to join us for Mass. A reminder that all students need to be in correct winter uniform for this Mass.

This week is Support Staff Week and as a school we thank all our support staff- Anne, Anna, Alyse, Jenna, Viv, Helen, Mel, Cathy and Des, for everything they do for our students and staff. They are an integral part of our school and we could not do what we do without them.

This week you will receive your child's second HERO comment for this term. Later in the term we will be having Parent Interviews. Further information will come home later this term and you will be able to request an interview.

Well done to everyone for reaching our second schoolwide reward. This is our token reward system which supports and embeds our school values. All students have contributed by showing our school values every day in every way. The reward is a Board Games afternoon.

Good luck to all those students who will represent our school and the SWZ at the Interzone Cross Country next week.

School Uniform: All students should be wearing correct winter uniform. Thank you to everyone who has made sure that their children are wearing correct winter uniform including footwear. A reminder that girl’s socks should be knee length and navy blue or white ankle socks. No other style, length or colour is acceptable. Nail polish is not permitted with the school uniform. If for some reason your child is not wearing correct uniform, please let their teacher know in writing.

Chocolate: Thanks to everyone who has sold and returned their chocolate money. Could we have all money back by Friday 2nd July.

Communication from School:

We have several ways of communicating with you from school. We use HERO to report on children's progress and share messages by email. We will also use this system to text you in an emergency. If you cannot log in please see either myself or your child's teacher and we can set you up.

We also have a School App. Please see the details below in the newsletter. Any information that we send out by App will also be available on our school website. The school calendar has been updated and is available on all these platforms.

Book Club: Issue 4 of the book club closes on June 22nd. No late orders will be accepted. If you are sending an order form to school please ensure that you have ordered the correct book by using the right number.

Thought for the Week

"The #Eucharist heals because it unites with Jesus: it makes us assimilate his way of living, his ability to be broken up and given to brothers and sisters, to respond to evil with good. #CorpusDomini" (Pope Francis @pontifex)

Our Special Character

Congratulations to all our students who made their First Reconciliation last Thursday. It was a

lovely celebration and the students were all very respectful and participated very well. Please keep all our students and their families in your prayers as they continue on this journey with preparation for the sacrament of Confirmation starting soon.

At the end of June we will be having a Special Character Review. The Review looks at all aspects of our Special Character and is conducted by 2 external reviewers. We look forward to working with the reviewers and welcoming them to our school.

We will be celebrating our school Feast Day this Friday 11th June with Mass. A notice about this day was sent home last week.

The "Building Families of Faith" programme run by the Archdiocese which was to start tomorrow night has been postponed until later this year.

RE in Tui Class!

Over the last few weeks in Tui class we have been learning about the Holy Spirit. We have learnt that the Holy Spirit came to the disciples at Pentecost in the form of wind and fire. It also came to us in baptism in the form of water. We know that we can see the Holy Spirit working in each other when we are kind and show our RISE values. We have also discussed the Holy Spirit being a part of the Trinity along with God the Father and Jesus the son.

Last Wednesday, along with Pukeko and Ruru we hosted our buddy liturgy. The theme was St Francis of Asissi and his love of animals. We explored what we have learnt about St Francis - that he discovered God in nature and the beauty of creation. Through St Francis we can come to know God more deeply by appreciating the simple things in life and by caring for the earth and all living things. We were joined by 3 dogs and 1 cat who were very well behaved and sat very respectfully throughout the liturgy! Each student had an important part to play and participated with confidence and respect.

Thank you to all those parents who came and especially to those who brought along their gorgeous pets.

Celebrating our students

Talofa lava! We started Samoan Language last week with the National anthem at school prayer.

Our students shared their language and culture with all of the classes at school, and were also able to share at Petone Library during ‘Storytime’. On Wednesday, we enjoyed a taste of Samoa with some delicious chop suey. Fa'afetai to all our wonderful Samoan tamariki.

We are into our second week of Keeping Ourselves Safe programme. Constable Blue has been a great favourite in the classes!

NZ Playhouse visited last week and put on a hilarious and interactive performance of Rumpelstiltskin. There was lots of laughter and thinking about the value of kindness and cooperation and the importance of keeping a promise. Check out the photos below.

Reporting an Absence

If your child is sick or will be away from school for any reason, please inform the office before 9am on the day if possible. There are several ways to do this:

Board of Trustees News

Sharing images of students

It's been wonderful to see so many photos of our school children in our many recent school and sporting events. As a school, we are happy for parents and caregivers to take photos and videos of their children while participating in public school, cultural, and sporting events.

We understand you may like to share these images or videos with families and friends. At the same time, we need to balance the interests and privacy of all our students and their families. If you would like to share videos or images on social media or public platforms, we would ask you to first consider:

  • If the photos or videos feature other students, please ask their caregivers whether they can appear on a public platform; or edit the images or videos to remove those children.
  • Making sure other children are not named in online posts unless you have consent from their caregivers.
  • Showing the images to your children and talking about them, before posting them online. This will help your children understand they should always think about what goes out to the public on the internet and reinforces the work our teachers do in educating students about their 'digital footprint'.

There are several families within our community, who for a variety of reasons, do not wish their children to appear on any public platforms. While we make sure this is adhered to in all school communications, and we convey this to all sporting and cultural groups the school has an association with (such as Total Touch etc) we ask you to think about the considerations above, so that everyone's wishes are respected.

We believe that as a school community we can find the right balance between protecting children's privacy, and sharing the great work and activities many of our children are involved with outside of school, rather than forming a strict policy around this. If you do have questions about this, or would like to know more, please feel free to approach any member of the Board, or Liz, to discuss further.

FOSH news

Hi everyone, we are going to run the school holiday programme again in the first week of the next school holidays. Monday 12th July to Friday 16th July, 8.30am-3.30pm.

Any enquiries please contact Kate Wasson on 021374335 or email Madeline Louden

Also we are hoping to run a Frock Swap, so please start collecting/sorting your clothes you no longer wear. (Remember they need to be in a gently worn condition). This is a great opportunity to get 'new' clothes in exchange for the ones you no longer wear or for a small price.

We are also very happy to say that we will be offering a parents/adult cyber safety evening at a later date. Please keep an eye out for the details.
