Principal Kuhn Message for the week
We are entering into an exciting time of year! It is the time that we get to prove all the learning that is happening at Safford. As we move into the next round of testing, here are a few things to remember:
1. We all test better if we get a full night of sleep..
2. We all test better if we have a good dinner and a good breakfast. Our brain need food to think.
3. We all test better if we come to school in a good mood. Remember, our students have worked very hard to make up Covid Learning loss, and many are very anxious. A few positive and kind words from home will go far.
4. Being at school on-time, for the entire day and planning for any needed appointments needs to be a top priority during testing season. It is nerve wrecking to test, but it is worse to test in a make up session.
5. Teachers will be preparing our students to take the tests - please ask every night one of these questions:
- What is the most exciting thing you learned today?
- What is the new testing skills you practiced today?
- What is your goal for this next round of testing? (All students are setting goals and should be ready to answer this question.)
This week students are taking surveys about their classes. Then we kick into the next round of Dibels, Benchmark, iReady, etc. You may ask - why so much testing? Great Question! Read below!
iReady Celebrations
We are so excited to have our first Ice Cream Social to celebrate the students that met their average time on task for the month of September and October. Students are expected to be on iReady for 45 minutes a week in math and another 45 minutes a week in reading. Our students are making great academic growth using iReady and we are so excited to celebrate the students this Thursday. Students that met their time goal were given an invitation for them and their parents/guardians!!
Hello Huskies!
Thank you for your continued partnership with our Higher Ground Team as we continue to deploy the Restart S.M.A.R.T. strategy at Safford K-8 Community School.
We hope you walked away from Jansen’s Wednesday PD on de-escalation with tools you can implement in your classrooms. Huge shout-out to Kerry and Etana who had to deal with our triggered principal during the role play.
Sidney, Inna, or Fred would be happy to work with you to address specific issues. We can map students to help you identify triggers and develop specific de-escalation strategies.
There are many members of the Safford Community that don’t know the details of the Restart S.M.A.R.T. strategy and we are happy to join your PLCs to talk about the strategy and how we can not only support your students, but the families and yourself as well.
Here is a brief update of our work over the last week:
Student Support (Sidney/Stacey/Brittni):
Sidney, Stacey (intern), and Brittni (colleague) met with 30 students this week
Facilitated coaching sessions with 20 students. In these conversations, students are either asked to identify goals and make plans toward the goals or to examine inter- or intra-personal issues they are dealing with and identify how it's affecting them and identify solutions
Stacey and Brittni facilitated activities with 10 students in order to find out their personality traits, love languages, major life changes and traumas, grit skills, and self-control skills. The data collected in these activities allows us to identify individual needs and assets, as well as school-wide student and family needs and assets. This will inform what kind of supports and resources we will bring to the community
Family Support (Inna):
Developed a list of students/families for the St. Pius X Angle Tree project
Connected with 3 families to discuss their needs and provide support
Generating a project list to cover Pat Ponce’s responsibilities while she is recovering from her injuries
Worked with Reyna to set up and announce the next PTO meeting
Connected a family with CDLN
Site Director (Fred):
Request two AEDs from the Gootter Foundation
Facilitated the School Council meeting and worked with the Secretary to get minutes out
Accounted for tickets and cash from the Fall Festival, handed off cash to the PTO President, Maria, for deposit
Met with Marcus Doe from redemption Church to discuss Safford volunteer and resource needs
Participated in on site visit from local sign company to discuss LED panel sign for Safford
Looking for a new source of food boxes to address food insecurity issues on campus
Armory Park Neighborhood Association monthly meeting
Supporting Higher Ground Staff
Please let any member of our team know if you have any questions. Thank you for your continued collaboration!
