Literacy Week 2023 Was a Big Hit!
June 5-9, 2023
Cunniff students and faculty had an amazing week celebrating their love for reading. Our theme was Reading Makes A Difference. We hope that students will continue to read over the summer in order to maintain and build on their fantastic growth as readers. Thank you families and staff for all your support in making this week special for students!
DECORATED DOORS!
Teachers and students decorated almost every door in the school! Some doors were interactive, some had favorite books, and some classes connected the decorated door to learning in the classroom!
School-wide Read Aloud
We started our week off by passing around two books to every classroom. Students did not know when the book would arrive and when it did they had to Stop, Drop Everything and Read. After the read aloud, students wrote their thoughts and feelings about how reading makes a difference in their lives. We hung their reflections up on the outside doors so students and parents could see them during drop-off and pick-up.

Character Day!!
Teachers and students dressed up as their favorite book character! We saw Harry Potter, the Paper Bag Princess, Camila from Bad Case of the Stripes, Crayons from The Day the Crayons Came Home, and many more!
Mystery and Community Readers
On Tuesday, teachers visited classrooms to read a favorite book. Also, throughout the week, community members, administrators, firefighters, and more came to read books in classrooms.
Pajama Hat Day!
READING KNOCKS YOUR SOCKS OFF!
READ MY SHIRT DAY!
Author Visits
We were lucky enough to have two amazing authors visit. Janet Costa-Bates read her book Time for Bed, Old House to our kindergarten and first grade students. Second through fifth graders read her book, Rica Baptista before her visit, and she helped them create characters for their own stories. Phaea Crede, a Watertown graduate and local author, had the kids laughing at her silly picture books with engaging characters!

Fireside Reading
We ended Literacy Week with an exciting Field Day. The weather cooperated so students got to play outside almost day. To wind down, many teachers projected a crackling fire while students relaxed with a good book. What a great day and a great Literacy Week. Reading really does make a difference!
