In 1519 the Spanish goverment commised Alonso Álveraz de Pineda (1494-1519) to explore the coast of the Gulf of Mexico in the hope of finding a water passage from the gulf to the orient.
What did he find?
Alonso Álverex de Pineda commanded a Spanish expedition that sailed along the Gulf of Mexico coastline from Florida to Cobo Rojo in 1519. He and his crew men were the first Europeans to explore and form a map of the Gulf littoral between the areas previously explored by Juan ponce DeLeon and Diego Velaquez.
Why was he important?
He mapped the coastline of the Gulf of Mexico.
