The mission of Sioux Center Christian School is to disciple God’s children by equipping them with a knowledge and understanding of Christ and His creation so that they can obediently serve God and others as they work and play.
Every Student TREASURED, Every Student TRAINED, Every Student TRANSFORMED
FROM DR. B.
Happy Wednesday, Trailblazers!
Let’s keep going with our series the Stories of SCCS. Last time, I shared the story of Al Bandstra, a long-time 6th grade teacher. This time, meet Eileen Buiter, our director of operations and food service. Have a great rest of your week!
Stories of SCCS: Eileen Buiter, director of operations and food service
How long have you served/been at/been involved with SCCS?
- I started working at SCCS when my youngest son started kindergarten. This is currently my 15th year. I have been a cook, custodian, and drama director, plus so much more.
What's something interesting about you?
- A few years ago, my family got me an orchid as a present. It thrived on my kitchen counter, and I was intrigued. My orchid collection is now well over 30 plants. I think I only have two that are the same. Most days I have at least 10 blooming and sometimes all 30 are blooming at the same time. I am always very excited when I see a new flower shoot coming up and can't wait for them to open so that I can enjoy the beauty of God's creation.
How does your role fulfill the mission of Sioux Center Christian School? How are you Living God’s Story at SCCS?
- My role at SCCS is unique. I take care of the building, help with the hot lunch program, keep an inventory of technology and furniture, scrub floors, put together furniture, take out trash. I like to create order out of chaos.
Why do you choose to be part of the SCCS community?
- I started 15 years ago working in the kitchen because it was a good fit for my family. I had been a stay-at-home mom and wanted hours that allowed me to be at home when my kids were home. I stayed at SCCS because I enjoy the challenge of my multifaceted job. I enjoy working with high school students who work on the custodial crew in the summer, mentoring them through their first jobs, as well as with middle school students in the drama program, encouraging them to develop their talents. I also enjoy lending a helping hand at school when problems happen during the day. It is a joy to be able to clean up a mess so that the teachers can keep teaching.
Which throughline do you most identify with and why?
- Servant Worker. Last year I encouraged the support staff at SCCS to try to live out this throughline using the storyline "Called to Serve". I believe that every role at SCCS is important: cooks, custodians, bus drivers, tech help. We step up to serve when we are called, often literally leaving lunch on our desk when the phone rings and we are needed elsewhere in the building. Having a servant attitude makes these tasks full of joy.
What is most important to you about SCCS?
- I am continually impressed at how everyone who works at SCCS is committed to the mission. Plus, they work hard every day to meet the needs of as many students as possible.
ORDER DISCOVERERS
In November, we are focusing on being Order Discoverers. Last week the students enjoyed creating Tessellations with their connection group partners. You might be thinking, "What in the world are tessellations??" A tessellation is a never-ending pattern on a flat 2-D surface (such as a piece of paper) where all of the shapes fit together perfectly like puzzle pieces, and the pattern can go on forever. They are a form of mathematical art that reveals how God's amazing design and order creates beauty! Older students helped younger students create a repeated pattern with paper and colors, and together they worked to see and rejoice in God's fingerprints throughout all of creation! Psalm 19:1: "The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands. Day after day they pour forth speech, night after night they reveal knowledge. They have no speech, they use no words; no sound is heard from them. Yet their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world."
