Message from the Superintendent

Scarborough Employees are Rock Stars

This week I would like to recognize the talents that come from our employees who have played an incredible role in making sure the learning continues with our students. We are forever grateful for the contribution and dedication of our Scarborough employees.

Notably, our teachers are teaching in the most challenging environment they could have imagined. I continue to hear the many stories of the amazing innovation and practices that have surfaced this school year by members of our families and at large our community members.

I appreciate our parents and community members with their resilience and patience during these unprecedented times. Your continued support knowing the ingenuity of all our employees has allowed us to explore existing resources and tools in new ways, and develop classroom practices that are new, and will continue to provide benefits as time goes on.

Without question we will continue to find hurdles as they present themselves during these times. Your support and encouragement to our employees has meant a lot and we appreciate you being their biggest cheerleader!

News from the Board of Education

Introducing the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee

The board is proud to announce that the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee (DEI committee) has been approved, the members selected and climate survey work is underway. The Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee, in collaboration with the Mid Atlantic Equity Consortium (MAEC), will promote the goal of diversity, equity and inclusion for all individuals in our school district regardless of their identity (ie race, gender, age, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, disability, or socioeconomic status). Using this data, the committee will make recommendations to the board outlining next steps and they will monitor the progress of the action plan over time.

The board is grateful to those who applied to be part of the DEI committee. The thoughtful applications we received show great promise for the work to be done. Be on the lookout for updates from the DEI committee as they start their important work to create a welcoming and safe environment for all Scarborough students. Please reach out to the board with any questions that you may have at

As people all over the country are excited to celebrate Super Bowl Sunday this weekend, a reminder that, while in the midst of a pandemic, we all keep in mind necessary distancing, mask, and gathering mandates and taking precautions to keep everyone safe. We are SO appreciative of school staffs and families in our community that have been diligent in efforts to follow guidelines, and these actions have resulted in relatively low positive cases in our school communities. A few friendly reminders as you plan ahead:

  • Limit in-person gatherings only to people you live with.

  • Consider hosting or attending virtual Super bowl celebrations.

  • If the weather permits such, increase general ventilation by keeping windows and doors open.

  • Avoid gatherings with elderly or those with various pre-existing health conditions.

This past month students at Wentworth participated in a yearbook cover drawing contest. There were over 150 students who participated and submitted a drawing and teacher votes narrowed it down to 10 finalists. Then the students voted and these are the top 3 drawings. These will be printed as the front, back and the title page in the 20-21 Wentworth yearbook.

Linked here, you will find an overview to Scarborough Public Schools Fully Remote Preparedness Plan, which was shared with the School Board at their December 3, 2020 meeting. Although our goal is to maintain in person learning to the greatest extent possible, there needs to be adequate staffing to facilitate in person learning.
