Making a difference, one person at a time
Sept. 25th - 29th
It's very important to understand that school has drastically changed from the time most parents were attending elementary school. Gone are the days of nap time and gone are the days of waiting for kids to develop at their pace. Our Michigan Legislature has passed a law that really focuses on reading proficiency for elementary students.
Here is what you should be aware of.
- When students begin a school year they are regularly given a universal screener. This screener gives the school data on each individual student. Our screeners include NWEA Map Tests and Fountas & Pinnell assessments. NWEA is computer based and Fountas & Pinnell is one-on-one.
- Once the data is collected it will then be compared to previous years data (if that is applicable).
- At this point school officials will then identify students with a reading deficiency.
It is very fair to now wonder these things.
- What does a deficiency look like?
- If my child has a deficiency what does this mean?
First of all, a deficiency is anything below grade level. Please keep in mind this is not one piece of data, this is multiple pieces of data, plus teacher input and for kindergarten students we will even take into account age.
Next, if your child has a reading deficiency the school will develop an IRIP plan (Individualized Reading Instruction Plan). These plans will be communicated to parents. In fact, if your child has an IRIP plan it is fair to expect you would be personally contacted for a face to face meeting.
Please understand that this is not a death sentence and the sky is not falling. This is ultimately an accountability check point to help students receive the ultimate level of support.
Then in 2019-2020 the 3rd Grade Reading Law takes on real teeth. If a student is deficient or behind by one grade level or more they will be retained. Final say on retentions will go to the District Superintendent.
This law is bound to create discomfort if your student has a deficiency. Please understand we will do everything in our power to help each child succeed. As a parent you can also help. Check out the graphic below.
Finally, I encourage all families to read the articles below, communicate with your child's principal and teacher and read with your child often!
