News from Manchester Memorial Elementary School!
March 6, 2020
Principal's Note...
What a busy week! In addition to all of the fun and learning, the Administrative team and myself have been working together to ensure we have plans in place regarding the COVID-19 situation that is unfolding across our country and the world. Our Facilities Department is increasing efforts to ensure that all schools are as clean and germ free as possible.
In addition to the cleaning our existing custodians are doing, we will be adding cleaning staff to focus on disinfecting all of the rooms and offices on a nightly basis. We have also added additional hand sanitizer stations throughout each of the schools.
We are continuing to check with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as well as with our local and state Departments of Health and will be sure to keep you updated on any new information we receive.
Have a great weekend!
Best,
John

Manchester Cultural Council awards grant for Clap Your Hands
On February 7, the show “Clap Your Hands” performed at MMES as one of many PTO enrichment programs. Manchester Cultural Council, which supports culturally enriching programs, also joined in to fund the performance! The show, “Clap Your Hands,” explores the rise and changing roles of music in the African-American community: as a mental release during trying times, a vehicle for communication in the Underground Railroad, and a “common ground” during the Civil Rights Movement.
The talented ensemble, through the Young Audiences of Massachusetts, is led by celebrated pianist and Berklee College of Music professor, George Russell, Jr. Throughout the show, students were educated about one of America’s most popular musical genres, highlighted by its various styles throughout history. Students and staff clapped along as they learned how African-American music (spirituals, folk-blues, and gospel music) has profoundly influenced both musical and political movements throughout our nation’s history.
This program was supported in part by a grant from the Manchester Cultural
Council, a local agency which is supported by the Mass Cultural Council, a state agency. Thank you Manchester Cultural Council and Manchester PTO!

Building Project Update
2-7-19 - National Grid will be running a line from Summer Street to our property to eventually supply the new building with natural gas. They also need to install a telephone pole near where the clothing donation bin is. Unfortunately, this will most likely take place on a school day and could have a slight impact on drop-off and pickup. Stay tuned for more information if needed. The project is on or slightly ahead of schedule at this point!
Help Wanted!
We are currently searching to build our substitute pool for the 19-20 school year. Do you know someone locally who has experience working with children in a school setting? Please have them email Mrs. Dodge directly at dodgec@mersd.org, and we can take them through the application and screening process. We are also looking for another crossing guard. Thanks so much in advance!
