What can you "step-up" to?
Symphonic Band
Traditionally, this ensemble has required after school sectionals first semester and second semester. With our new rehearsal format, we are going to forgo scheduling any first semester sectionals. Second semester, will have scheduled sectionals between January and March. A schedule will be posted on the band calendar before the Holiday Break.
Google Drive has a folder labeled Symphonic Band. This folder contains a rehearsal schedule, mp3 recordings of the pieces we are preparing, and more items are added daily. Use these reference tools often! They are there for you.
I very much look forward to working with this group of fantastic musicians. I know that each of you will fulfill all of your expectations and be a musical asset to this band.

Concert Band
We are very excited about our new schedule for concert season. The Concert Band is very lucky to have Mrs. Knowles available during our rehearsal time. We will still meet daily, but only during 6th period.
Our goal in this ensemble is to continue developing fundamental techniques that were taught in Junior High, then stretch students as musicians into more advanced players. Music selections chosen should be attainable for ALL players, but will require home practice to refine techniques. Come to rehearsal knowing YOUR part so you can spend the band period learning everyone else’s role in the music.
If necessary, as large group contest approaches, required sectionals may be held after school. I will make sure to give a week notice.
A significant portion of the student’s grade each quarter (35%) will consist of playing assessments. These may be recorded and turned in or performed in class. These will be posted on the Homework Matrix.

I am very excited about this year’s Concert Band and have high expectations for what we can achieve in the next few months.

Pep Band Requirements
The way Pep Band works is outlined in the handbook (pg. 11)
"The Pep Band performs at 10 winter sporting events; events typically performed at include home basketball games, typically one hockey game, and a few other sporting events. All band members are required to perform at four pep band events. Not doing so directly affect the student’s third quarter performance attendance grade. Perfect attendance at all pep band performances is required to earn a point toward a band letter (see “Awards”). This group will be admitted free to events at which it is to perform. Only approved members (those who perform and are wearing the pep band uniform) will be admitted to the event. Members are to wear the official orange Southview Band t-shirt."
